More Achievement Point Changes

by tank| Published: Wednesday, February 14 @ 12:04:51 EST
Last week there was a news article on the rule changes around Achievement Points. This week even more information was revealed by BigVIP on Major Nelson’s latest podcast.

First to recap what we already know. For retail releases, games must have the ability to give you 1000 achievement points for the retail price. Publishers have the option to hold back some of those achievements to give them to you later via downloadable content, but that content must be free. Publishers can now add an additional 250 points over and above the 1000 via downloadable content that can either be free or pay. In addition, retail games have gone from 50 achievements maximum to 60 across the original game and any downloadable content.

Xbox Live Arcade games will see similar increases. They must give you 200 points for the initial purchase price and an additional 50 can be added via free or pay downloadable content. The maximum number achievements for Xbox Live Arcade games also increases from 12 to 15.

There are two new rules that haven’t yet been discussed and were revealed on the podcast. The first one is about competitive advantage in multiplayer games. EA last year started offering gamers the choice of buying content usable in multiplayer sessions which gave them a competitive advantage over people who didn’t want to pay. Microsoft has put an end to those practices. From now on any piece of downloadable content that gives a person a competitive advantage in multiplayer must be unlockable in the game for free. So this rule might also apply to the hugely popular Chromehounds that let you buy Mech upgrades for use in multiplayer battles.

The second new rule is more of a guideline. Microsoft has received a huge amount of feedback regarding the dislike of multiplayer achievements. If achievements are based on ranked play to try and stop ‘boosting’ (which doesn’t work at all), it affects the game play in a negative way a lot of the time. Microsoft has decided to relay that to publishers via their Guidelines and Best Practices documentation. Many publishers follow these guidelines while others may decide to go their own way. At least the publishers are made aware of what the gamers do and do not like when decided their games achievement awards.

All in all some very positive changes for Achievement points. Much like other aspects of the Xbox system, Microsoft is leading the innovation and blazing trails for others to follow. When you do that, not everything is perfect out of the gate and Microsoft is committed to listening to the gamer community and making the appropriate changes.

Multiplayer Achievements (Score: 1)

I think the problem with multiplayer achievements is that most developers limit them to ranked matches only. So you have people playing ranked matches for the sole purpose of earning a particular achievement. If they would allow those achievement to be earned in player matched or custom games, then it would be easier for those who only want to get achievements to earn them and it would keep most of the riff raff out of the ranked matches.

I don't think ranked games should have achievement points at all. Ranked play already has leaderboards, being at the top of that list is it's own achievement.

Achievements should be in player matches only i think.

I don't think achievements should be placed on multiplayer matches at all. As you said, the ranked matches have their own achievements in the leader boards. Adding achievement points on top of that is unnecessary.

However, the player matches, I feel, are a less competitive and more recreational way of playing multiplayer and should also not be used to gain achievements.

Which is why there are two types of multiplayer systems, ranked and unranked. If you add achievements to the unranked you've basically made it more competitive and less recreational.

Achievements should be left to campaign play only.

Exactly what a good portion of the community voiced to Microsoft. They aren't going to make that a hard rule but have put that opinion in their best practices document. So hopefully we'll see some changes on that front.

I agree, multiplayer achievements should be done away with. People just will boost with their friends to get them making them much less of an achievement.

When I get a game, I will try to get as many SP achievements as possible (as long as it isn't insane to do so) but I rarely get any MP achievements. I just don't care to put the time into playing a bunch of ranked matches with a bunch of asshats just to earn a few MP achievements.

If the MP were included in just the non-ranked player matches, I would probably get more of them.

I hate having to play with douche-bags in ranked play to unlock achievements. I couldn't give a crap about leaderboards but i do like achievements. So i feel like i'm forced into a bad situation just to unlock achievement points when they force you to play ranked to get them.

So i really hope it stops.

got to say i agree with everything that has been said in the posts about doing away with mp achivements tbh i have finshed rainbow six las vegas and also gears. And now i have lost interest in getting the rest of the points due to the fact that i ahve to play with a bunch of ppl who think they are rambos.got to say it the best game i am playing at the moment is call of duty 2 because it is not about mp achievements at all just sp and imo that is ten times better i would never have played the game on ventran if it wasnt for the fact that i could get 1000 points out of it and tbh i am really enjoying it yes it is hard in places but at least when i do finish it i can say i did that without boosting or cheating. So i say this is a very good thing for m/s to do thank god they are listening to the ppl that buy the games.

I think one game that did the best job with multiplayer achievements was Perfect Dark Zero. They had some really cool achievements, like the 1,000 headshots achievement and 100 Sniper Kills and such. I think achievements like these made the game fun, and you actually had to be pretty good to get it(it'd be pretty hard to get 1,000 headshots by just playing a deathmatch game with your friend).

I think this is a huge step in the right direction. It is great to know that the company is listening to gamers and taking action on the information they gather. I for one know that the chances of me getting 1000 points on most games in none, because I don't play in ranked matches. Great news.
