Windows 10 tales/opinions/observations...

I'm going to put this up here and people can drop in and share their experiences as they can on the Win10 roll out. Not sure if I'll be able to do this myself until possibly Friday.

Currently using Acronis to get stuff backed up. Not sure if this software is good or not as it has always been a little cranky on Win 8.

I've used Win 8 and Surface RT 8 for two years. Perfectly fine OS but I'd agree Win 7 acted a bit more solid and intuitive.

Once I'm happy with my data backups, I'll be going to Win 10. Unlike previous Win upgrades, I'm not going to expend resources on backing up the operating system. It's free and I presume, replaceable. Data is the priority.

You'll hear about my experiences here.

My laptop is upgrading now.  Looks like it is going to take a couple of hours.  Think I will take a nap.

Didn't take quite 2 hours.  Upgrade went smoothly with no problems.  Feels like Windows 7.  Still fooling around with it, but so far, so good.  Recommend "never combine" in the Task Bar properties.

I've experienced this error for the last two days.

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80240020: Upgrade to Windows 10 Home.

I'm looking for workaround now. My worry is, I'll find one.

I just discovered this Microsoft tool. It fixed some errors but I still don't see Win 10  yet.

Seems to be a number of people out there with a similar problem.  Did you try to initiate the upgrade from the little symbol in the right side of the task bar?  That is how I started mine.  Also were all Win 8 updates installed?

Some initial observations:

-- where the hell is windows update?  Not in control panel.  Took me awhile to find it -- in settings reachable from the start icon in lower left of task bar.  Also the old app screens are available there as well.  Not very intuitive.

--  everything else seems to be working ok except that the new browser, Window Edge seems to be always on -- in the background I guess.

--  the search bar (and Cortana) defaults to on in the task bar, and no matter what one does it covers any icons you have already pinned there.  I reset it to show icon to overcome this problem.  This is only a problem when the task bar is on the bottom.

--  I use a usb mouse so I set the touchpad properties to disable when usb mouse detected.  Seems that when I boot up, the properties reset and I have to set that value again.  Not a problem in Window 8.

I'm not going to push any harder for the update. Accessing the Win 10 symbol says they will let me know, so I'll wait and see. Eventually it will be available to all. In the mean time, Action Centre/Reliability History will let me know of anymore failures.

After reading this thread, I'm glad I held off buying that Win 8 machine with Win 10 upgrade. Crossing my fingers that there will be a better selection of Win 10 pre-installed machines for sale soon.

My ship is yet to come in. Used two different workarounds.

I assume directly loading the upgrade will work but I am waiting a bit longer before pulling the trigger.

Perhaps my laptops are late getting the upgrade for a very good reason.

Oh well.

I guess my ship is in port waiting to be unloaded. Go figure.

Maybe tomorrow I'll get on about it.

More to lose than to gain for me, so I shall try to be patient a little bit longer.

Less than 1.5 hours from start upgrade to posting here with Edge. Edge is very fast.

One program "Quickscan" reported driver problems. That might be my HP scanner. Things to do.

Keyboard "Enter" is sending the cursor to the top of the entry window. This keyboard has been acting up for months too so...?

I don't see my favorites in Edge yet. I think I read about that. Also read it was coming soon and sharing across MS platforms, as it did with IE and Win 8.1 devices.

Found out how to import my favourites into Edge.

Found an inadequate workaround for my film scanner.

Still wandering around looking for things that used to be so easy to find.

Apparently Win 10 will not play DVD movies. Probably won't need that but you never know.

Haven't finished dealing with Acronis.

Put in complaints about the scanner, Acronis and Microsoft Money.

OS seems to be operating very smoothly.

I had a major problem with homegroup.  Had one set up for my laptop and desktop in 8.1 but the laptop and desktop weren't joined after the upgrade but Win10 kept asking each to join an existing homegroup!!  When I tried, using the last password I had, the join operation would just hang.  My work around was to connect to the internet with the 5ghz band (I have a triple band router) I had not used before with my laptop.  At that point Win10 thought there was no homegroup on "that" network and I was able to create one.  Problem solved.

Another possible solution suggested by M$ if anyone else is having the same problem.  Delete the following folder and restart:

c:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking (or whatever drive designation you are using).

That folder probably contains all the existing homegroup data and is created when  homegroup is created.  Delete the folder and the system thinks there is no homegroup.

Funny you should mention that. My Win 10 did not join the existing homegroup and wants to create a new one. I'll probably be looking at a workaround soon.

You should probably bite the bullet, create a new homegroup, and join all your devices.  A pain, but it shouldn't take too long.

Cortana is not yet available in Canada. Bummer because she is on Win Phone 8.1 and I like the utility.

Windows Defender had barely scanned a fraction of my computer's files after 2 hours. I defragged, excluded my backup drive, deleted a bad exclusion drive reference and completed a full can in 1.5 hours.

I believe I read a rumor somewhere that the DVD playability will be added in an upcoming patch. And no I don't have a link, just an iffy memory, so....

Acronis True Image 2013 is not supported in Win 10. It was working, but somewhat flaky, so I uninstalled it. Turned on the Win 10 File History for now.

ZDNet reported an auto update causing endless rebooting. Root problem is Nvidia driver.

http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-cumulative-update-causes-reboot-... Here is potential Microsoft mitigation. How it could help if you have a problem before the solution baffles me.

I expect that tool would help in those cases where the failed update doesn't crash the system.  What they should have done was to leave windows update alone like it was in Win 8.1 (and previous versions).  Don't force updates down our throats.  I actually had this repeating auto update problem for an old printer whose drivers were still on the computer.  I had to uninstall all the printer software, drivers, and the device itself to get the failed installs to stop.  If I had had that tool I suppose I could have stopped that repeating attempt at update.  I do hope M$ comes up with a fix to windows update to make it execute in a reasonable manner.  From reading the links it appears some power users and testers were pretty much pissed at how it operates now.

Apparently the latest round of Updates has fixed future potential Failed Update/reboot/loops.

I've noticed Edge might have a quick failure if you activate it too soon after startup. It happens so quick I barely notice it but it does register a fault in Reliability History.

I've been spending time organizing the App screen layouts and category names. I can get it too look a bit like the Win 8 touch layout which I am perfectly fine with.

I'm planning to get a Microsoft Designer Bluetooth® Desktop Mouse and Keyboard. My years old Dell USB keyboard is not working so good anymore and this will make some use of that Bluetooth feature I paid for in my laptop.

For anyone who doesn't know. Win 10 activation is tied to your hardware. That makes it easier to reinstall the OS after a major crash but won't play so friendly with big hardware changes. This feature has been around for awhile but is stronger than ever in Win 10.

Corel Video Studio 7 does not work with Windows 10.  8.5 supposedly does, but one has to uninstall QuickTime 7 first.  Downloading a trial version of 8.5 now.

Update - Apparently the problem is with the Windows 10 implementation of the usb microphone on my laptop.  Same issue with 8.5 as with 7.  Downloaded 7 on my desktop and it works after a fashion there.  Looks like the desktop is where I will be doing my voice over walk thru videos for awhile.

My new Microsoft Designer Keyboard and Mouse hooked up to Win 10 very easily. Two less USB ports being used now and that Bluetooth 4 tech I paid for is now doing some work.

This keyboard should also play nicely with my Surface RT, from what I've read.

FYI. This is a chicklet style keyboard. Very low profile. Feels like touching a slightly rubbery coating. I don't recommend it for large hands but it seems more than adequate for the typing I do.

Microsoft Money Plus Sunset now works. The latest Win 10 updates fixed the issue.

The scanner drivers and related software started working after uninstalling and iterating the re-install process until it worked. Pain in the arse.

Been running 10 on my laptop since it rolled out, it was available day one here. So far no issues aside from Live Mail. Seems to hang up for a few seconds often enough to be irritating. Aside from that it has been good enough to stay installed...Unlike 8 that lasted less than a week before I rolled back. Gaming rig is still on 7 though.

I may have been a little premature in my positive reaction to Windows 10.  Decided to do a simple voice over walk thru video earlier this week and...

What a crappy week this has been -- thanks in large part to Windows 10.  I upgraded to Windows 10 on my laptop and my video editing software (Corel Video 7) quit working.  Purchased a newer version that was advertised to work with 10 and it did not work.  Couldn't save voice over files.  Decided to purchase a laptop with 10 installed, knowing that I could return it if things didn't work out.  After loading everything up, video software did not work on the new one either -- too many "stopped working" messages.  Even though the new laptop's specs are more than the minimum required, it became clear enough that in Windows 10 one needs more horsepower to do this type of processing.  Btw, other apps were shutting down with the "stopped working" messages.

Screw this.  I did a factory reset on the "upgrade" laptop -- back to 8.1 and reloaded all my apps, data, and files -- everything is working fine -- and did a factory reset on the new laptop including a disk wipe and will be returning it today for a refund.

Bottom line, I don't think Windows 10 is quite ready for prime time.  We have a year for the free upgrade and I think I will wait for most of this period before trying this again.  By then hopefully things will work better.  My concerns about the lack of an app upgrade analysis tool came to fruition.

Btw, I understand a lot of the negative reactions to Windows 8.  I had the same type of reaction until I found Start8 from Stardock.  This is a simple little startup app that creates a Windows 7 like Start button on the taskbar and makes Windows 8 in desktop mode look a lot like Windows 7.  After I installed that it was smooth sailing for me.

Oldschool, I was having the same problems with windows mail, but outlook.com mail seems to work fine -- and fast.
