E3 2015: Sony Press Briefing

Full disclosure here: I have been to known to be bought with free food and beer, and Sony had both in spades prior to their briefing. If you watched the briefing online you could hear a lot of cheering and some not. I don’t know if it was all the beer or people were genuinely excited but I will give the audience the benefit of the doubt.

While I can say what Sony had to offer looked good I was torn. On one hand, they trotted out some new titles and a crap tonne of sequels, DLC and Remakes. On the other hand, from the reception of the audience, it seemed they got exactly what they wanted.

Sony started with The Last Guardian, which was announced in 2009 for the PS3 and reintroduced today as a PS4 game which means The Last Guardian will be seven years in the making when it releases in 2016. There wasn’t a lot to show here, but what was shown tugged at your heart strings. There was some destructible environments and puzzle solving, but no control schemes. Do you control both characters? Just the young boy? Time will tell.

Next up was Guerrilla games new franchise named Horizon: Zero Dawn. In 5 words I could describe Horizon: Zero Dawn as “Post-apocalyptic futuristic Tomb Raider”.

The first sequel to be shown was Hitman from Square Enix. PS4 owners get access to the Beta with a pre-order and six unique contracts.

Next up for the PC & PS4 is Street Fighter V. Here is another Beta being trotted out with the pre-order weight hung around it’s neck.

Hello Games showed off a bit with No Mans Sky. The bar has been set in terms of scale. Every point of light shown is a star with planets. Every planet has an eco system and every planet in the universe could be explored. Yes. Every. Single. Planet. Around. Every. Single. Star.

Media Molecule of Little Big Planet fame debuted Dreams. I honestly don’t know how to describe this PS4 exclusive game but basically you and others can paint scenes and characters with the PS4 controller and bring them to life.

Bungie trotted out new DLC for Destiny this year called The Taken King. New supers, likely higher levels, and exclusive stuff for PS4 owners.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate was shown with specific missions for PS4.

Next up was the trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake.

The next game drew the loudest cheers I heard all day. Shenmue 3 is starting to happen and it’s happening on Kickstarter. If Yu Suzuki can raise 2 million on Kickstarter you get this game. After an hour or so it was almost half way!

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 announced a new partnership with Sony for timed exclusives. If this was five years and five COD games ago, the crowd would have gone wild. At best there was a tepid response.

I have to level with you here. Sony trotted out a ton of games and I am going to cut to the last one as EA already showed Star Wars: Battlefront and I am unsure if you really care about Disney Infinity 3.0. However, if you are indeed a PS4 owner then you probably can’t wait for Uncharted 4. We actually had to though. The game didn’t start for a minute or so and when it did somehow the controller disconnected and Sony had to restart it and it looked like Sony had to have someone connect the stupidly short cable between the controller and the console and we had gameplay demo!
