Path of Exile Public Stress Test Weekend

Thu, 09/13/2012 - 10:49 — TANK

For the uninitiated, Path of Exile is a top down action RPG in the same theme as Diablo but in my opinion much better. It's been in development and closed beta for more than a year but Grinding Gear Games is slowly progressing towards Public Beta.

Path of Exile is a free to play game that is truly free. You don't need to pay to win. The only items you pay for are cosmetic based and all completely optional. The game is sort of a hybrid MMO. When you're adventuring you're alone but you can travel to common areas such as cities. In cities you can interact with everyone else in the realm, trade or group up and go on quests with up to eight other people. If you want to show your mettle in some PvP, Path of Exile is designed from the beginning with this in mind. Grinding Gear Games will test leagues, world PvP and tournaments all throughout the beta period.

The Open Weekend includes the first two acts of Path of Exile, special end-game maps, Default and Hardcore leagues, six character classes, approximately 70 active skills, 40 support gems and hundreds of item types. Grinding Gear Games added a host of unique items designed by Brother Laz, author of the popular Diablo 2 mod Median XL, and their "Diamond Supporter" fans.

Game servers go public at 5pm (PDT) on Friday, September 14th until 11:59pm on Sunday, September 16th. Over 55,000 people played during the last Open Weekend in July. Any feedback you provide this weekend will help Grinding Gear Games prepare for the permanent Open Beta.

The gameplay is really fun, and it's a great game to play with friends.  Also they often have leagues such as time limited pvp.  For example, there might be a 2 hour cut-throat league.  For two hours you can make a character, and the special rules are that you can "invade" other players instance and kill them, taking some of their experience and most of their items!  The default league has no PVP really, it's mostly co-op and is great fun.  There is a hardcore option for a league, but instead of deleting  your character if you die, diablo style, they instead move you to default with that character.

The game is a challenge, the skill "forest" is immense, and you can play a witch wielding a two handed axe with so much customization.

Highly recommend giving this game a shot!

I had a blast playing PoE during their last public beta.  I'm looking forward to jumping in again this weekend!  ...But I don't think I'll continue my previous Paladin, I'll probably just start as a new character since it's been ~2 months.

If your beta character is as old as you say, it may have been moved into a "Legacy" league.  Legacy is sort of like having a character wiped, because it can no longer be on the regular Default league with other new characters there, but it is at least still playable and has its items.

Also, they may have added in the Shadow class since you last played, which uses life stealing dual claws as an option for weapons!  Of course, due to the massive customization, a 2h sword wielding Shadow class that calls down firestorms and summons minions is just as possible a build :)

They do the Legacy moves not too often anymore.  More often they reset all characters Passive skill trees due to them changing it in extremely significant ways.  This isn't so bad as you are still in the same League, all you have to do is reassign the points back into the updated tree.

I'm really impressed that they're still willing to revamp the skill-tree/passives/etc...  I was afraid I'd go back into it this weekend with everything being the exact same.  I'm def gunna check out my old Paladin and see if I can salvage anything, or just keep playing, that would be great.  ...This is one of those games that excites me enough to support the Dev by buying a Key, because I thought Diablo 3 was boring as fuck - whereas PoE actually kept me playing laugh

I"m hopefully going to get on saturday and sunday.  I"m trying to finish out my current video game of choice by the time i go tto bed friday so i can have the rest of the weekend to play PoE some more.

I would have bought a beta key already if my character progression weren't going to be wiped when it rolls over to public beta.  I just don't want to put all that time in to just have to start over.  Which is why I stopped playing Diablo 3 when it became apparent late game how broken the WD class was and I can't be bothered replaying it 4 more times to get a fully leveled DH or Wiz.

I can't wait for this game to finally hit public beta tho.  Thiswill become a 'hobby' game for me.
