I waited a few days to post this because it hits a little too close to home for me.

Unoin*(I had to purposefully misspell this as apparently the bug for this word is not fixed.) University and Jackson, TN were ravaged by another tornado this past week. My parents live about 15 miles from Unoin University and teach at a local rival college. This is where I grew up and I consider Jackson my second home. In the past 10 years 29 people have died in tornadoes in the Jackson area. I personally survived one of those sitting in the men's dressing rooms at one of the Wal Marts as the roof was ripped off the building. It is an awe inspiring and yet unbelievably fearful experience all at the same time. I have seen the second oldest church in Tennessee outside of Nashville and East TN reduced to a pile of rubble and the post office next to it literally flattened. It is quite amazing what the power of a tornado can do.

In the last 10 years three F5 tornadoes have touched down in Jackson. At least 5 other tornadoes have also hit this town. 2 of those tornadoes came within a mile of my childhood home. It is odd to me that none of that affected me the way this most recent event did.

I guess it has something to do with the lack of death. To imagine the power of that storm and see what it did, and no one was killed. 16 people trapped in rubble, some of them for more than 6 hours. 52 people taken to the hospital. Over 1000 cars damaged. 8 buildings destroyed, including 5 dorms/apartment buildings. $50 million in damage. And no one died.

I drove by the Unoin campus the day after the tornado hit (Just happened to have to make a business trip that took me through Jackson and was actually planning on leaving the night this happened. I would have been in Jackson about the time the tornado hit.). While this video has some amazing pictures in it, it does not capture the scope of the damage to that campus. As of right now, these student can not return to campus until 2/18. But, it is quite unlikely they will be able to finish this semester due to the amount of damage.

It is sad to see what happened to that campus. It is amazing that no one died. That is until you look to Heaven and remember who is watching over us...

Actually, that bug is supposed to be fixed. Maybe it still isn't.
