No, this isn't some sort of weird psychobabble self-esteem improvement exercise. But, I will as though I should both rejoice and pat myself on the back.
My wife is not, and has never been, a fan of the video games. She will play Guitar Hero with me every once in a while. She'll fire up the PSP and play one of her Sonic the Hedgehog type game about once a week. But, other than that, she generally looks at, and speaks of, my 360 with a great deal of disdain.
I know where this disdain stems from. Without going into long arduous detail, a brief explanation:
When I first discovered CoD2 I played it unendingly. The wifey and I have had numerous "discussions" about my time in front of the gamebox. Although we have come to a mutual understanding in regards to the 360, and my time playing the game, I know she still hates that box as it takes away from her time with me (Despite my best efforts to convince her it still counts as spending time with me when she sits in the living room with me and listens to me grunt at her as she carries on a one-sided conversation while I am in the middle of a match.) and my time playing the game has lead to some pretty intense discussions (which, of course, always ended with me promising to play less and admitting my fault). Regardless, the whole point of this is that the wifey doesn't really care for the 360. At least that is what I thought...
This weekend we went to my folks for the weekend. It was pure dumb luck that it was Mother's Day weekend as the whole point of the trip was to pick up their dog to take along with our dogs to the mother-in-law's next weekend. But anyway, we had a great weekend and were getting ready to leave yesterday afternoon when my mom remembered something stuffed away in one of the bedroom closets that she wanted to give to my wife. Mom asks me to come help her get stuff off a shelf (my mom is 4'10"- a whole nother story) and dig for what ended up being a very neat very old leather purse she wanted the wifey to have. As we are about to walk out of the bedroom, the wifey notices a Wii box and Wii Wheel sitting on the bed. She very enthusiastically asks my mom who it belongs to. (Initially I got very excited thinking my folks were starting to finally get me and had either gotten themselves a Wii or had gotten me one and had not hid it very well. Or something like that.) Mom explains it belongs to a cousin of mine who stayed with them last week as he finished up school and had left it there for when he returned next week for summer school. Oh well. I didn't really think either of my brief fantasy conclusions about who the Wii belonged to would be true. But, what my wife said next literally blew my mind. Literally. For at least 30 seconds I could not think. The wifey says to my mom, "Oh yeah. Those are so stinking neat. We're getting one of those when we get back from the trip." WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?! WE ARE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? What the crap?!? This is news to me. She had not said a word to me about this. Of course, the wifey ended any conversation before it began and we said our goodbyes and hit the road.
No sooner had my wife gotten in the car and shut the door than I turned to her and literally screamed, "We are getting a Wii?!?" She smiles a sheepish smile and bats those amazing, almost invisible eyes, and says, "Sure. Why not?" What the crap? I am absolutely flabbergasted. To make a long story short... She apparently has been doing a lot of reading up on the with and is really excited about some of the games, especially Wii Fit. She wants to be able to play games with me more and wants "to really be interested in something I am so passionate about." She still refuses to play CoD with me, though. She says she will try to sit in and watch a few times. But she is so funny. I won't ask her to do watch me play any. She has done that before. Last time she watched me play was an HQ match I was playing with a bunch of 2o4D peeps a few weeks ago. It was a very very close match on Vacant and was truly and unending back and forth with a ton of non-stop action. The match ended and I looked over at her sitting on the couch. She is curled up in the fetal position squeezing the life out of a pillow and staring blankly at the TV. It was one of those times that makes realize how amazing and realistic KoD4 truly is. She proceeds to stand up. Walk over and give a big hug and kiss. And then walk into bedroom. She looks back at me and says, "I don't know how you find that relaxing or fun. It makes me a nervous wreck." But, I really appreciate her taking such a true interest in something I enjoy. So anyway, when we get back from our trip, we are heading to Best Buy to pick up a Wii and a couple of games.
Another convert to gaming. I'm not so ecstatic that I feel like I have won a battle or anything. But more like she finally gets it. And I am even happier about that.
So now I need suggestions. I have not paid even the slightest bit of attention to the Wii. It comes with Wii sports, right? Any suggestions on other games? Any must haves? Any that we should rent, but aren't worth buying? School me folks. I am clueless.
