I can't see worth a damn

I've worn glasses since the ninth grade, full time since the eleventh.  I'm sick of them.  A few years ago, I asked my optometrist about laser surgery.  He said "They're doing great things with astigmatism of .5 or less".  Much encouraged, I asked "What's mine?".  "5".  You'll notice the decimal point is after the 5.  Needless to say, the pop of my bubble was audible.  Well, the astigmatism is 6 now and I hate glasses, especially now that mine are starting to resemble the bottom of a coke bottle and $300 every 2 years even with insurance is really expensive.  Has anybody had a good experience with lasik for astigmatism?  Haven't even gone for an evaluation yet, scared I'm not a good candidate.  Somebody tell me a really good success story.

On a lighter note, what do you do with an elephant with three balls?  Walk him and pitch to the rhino.

Go back and get another opinion - seems like laser eye surgery is one of those fields where they get better and better each year. And, I think there are other types of laser procedures they can do (just ones that take a lot longer to recover from).

I'm holding out for the cybernetic eye replacements. I wanna be able to see in infrared and night vision as well as normal vision :) Hell, maybe even xray vision.

I got Lasik done over 2 years ago and it's awesome. I couldn't see the big E on the chart it was so bad. I now see 20/15, better than I have ever. Go get checked, can't hurt.

Everyone i know personally who's had lasik done have had no complications. But then there's a good number of bad experiences people don't hesitate to express on the internet. So really, they're your eyes. I wouldn't have eye surgery until my vision became unbearable because even shitty vision is better than no vision at all. But if you only need one eye done, i guess if it goes wrong you'll still have vision out of your other eye, you'll be able to see you just won't have very good depth preception anymore.

Kez, you want to be Steve Austin, don't you? The cybernetic eye would be cool as long as it didn't make that sound when I used it. And if you don't get this reference I'm taking you off my friends list

With that much astigmatism the chances of coming out perfect and not needing glasses is less. You might end up needing glasses still just significantly less perscription. There are other types of surgery for different cases besides LASIK. Go to a reputable laser correction center or corneal specialist and get another evaluation/opinion. Some laser centers have free evaluations. Good luck.
