Football Weekend

With the Cam scandal (or sCamdal) in full effect, I'll just concentrate on the games first, as there are some good ones:

Ole Miss @ Tennessee - Not a very good game on paper, but for SEC folk, this could be an entertaining lead in to the bigger games. I'm going to take Ole Miss here.

Georgia @ Auburn - Auburn at home, gets the win. I don't see Newton being suspended this week, but if things change, UGA wins.

Mississippi State @ Alabama - This one has me worried. I think MSU has a lot to play for, and hasn't been getting much respect this season, while amassing a 7-2 record. The line at Bama -13 seems steep to me. I do think the home field advantage and talent gap pushes the needle in Bama's favor, but I don't see it as more than a 7 point win.

South Carolina @ Florida - Winner goes to Atlanta. I think the edge goes to UF at home, and sets up the SEC Championship Game.

Utah @ Notre Dame - yeah, who cares? However, any day ND loses is a good one. I expect a good day.

Oregon @ Cal - This could be an upset, but with Oregon's weapons and 4th quarter play, I think they get the job done.

Now, as for Cam Newton. My personal beliefs aside, I think that based on the information at hand, AU has no choice but to continue playing him. Benching him if he's clean would be a tremendous error. They could go the safe route and bench him, then ask for reinstatement, but that would ruin their season. He's the only reason they're not 5-5 or 6-4. This has been moving fast, so there's no telling what will happen. The Heisman is, without doubt, his as long as he's clean. But, can something like this be sorted out in a few short weeks?

**Edit - It actually just occurred to me - DeSoldier - if Newton is dirty, y'all would already have the East sewn up, no?

What I'm not clear on - let's suppose that he is declared ineligible after the UGA game. Would the vacation of wins be enforced right away, presumably sending LSU to the SECCG, or would he be ineligible for the remainder of the season, and then have the rest of the season sorted out later through an NCAA investigation, keeping Auburn alive for 2 more games on their way to Glendale? I'm thinking it would be the latter.

My personal thought is that if AU beats UGA and wins the SECCG, not much will happen. However, if AU loses to UGA and Alabama, or loses the SECCG, then soon after the game, a teary eyed Newton will announce he's leaving the team immediately.

I love the Notre Dame haters. Yet it is the only school with a true student athlete. Anyone can recruit a good athlete from off the streets, I just like to see them do it wile they make a 3.0 at a top school without any favoritism. Auburn wins easily. So does Bama, and Oregon.

Stanford says hi, along with the service academies. To a lesser extent, Vandy and Duke too. The academic excuse at Notre Dame doesn't hold as much weight as it used to. Didn't Mark Bavaro have to take the SAT's 3 times to get an 800? Notre Dame has a truly national recruiting reach - for example, I don't see many Indiana kids on their roster. ND gets consistent high caliber recruits. I'm a Notre Dame hater for 2 reasons - they were too pussy to try to beat Michigan State in 1966 and up until very recently were always afforded preferential treatment by the media.
