I'm starting to cave

I'm starting to cave on the Kinect.

Here's my current line of reasoning - check my math...

  1. I expect the 360 to be the main console in Microsoft's arsenal until about November 2013.  2012 at the earliest.  If this is so, considering Rock Band downloads, game DLC, installing a game every so often, demos and XBLA games, I should be running out of space some time in mid 2011.  Hence, a 250 GB hard drive is probably a wise bet.
  2. A 250 GB drive costs $130 at retail.
  3. Kinect costs $150 at retail.  I think this is a bit high, and would bite on a $100 price point (with pack-in game).
  4. The 250GB Slim with Kinect is $400.
  5. A new controller costs about $40 at Amazon.
  6. A new headset is $20?
  7. 400 - 340 = $60 to upgrade a quieter, sexier slim.
  8. Add back $20 for a hard drive transfer cable, $80 to upgrade to a quieter, sexier slim.
  9. Add back another $50 for my perceived price point of the Kinect and the slim comes to $130.
  10. A 4GB slim w/o Kinect is $200.  $140 if you remove controller and headset.
  11. A 4GB slim w/ Kinect is $300.  Add in a 250GB HDD, and I'm already over the price point of the 250GB slim w/Kinect.
  12. If it turns out that the Kinect is a failure, and in a year's time, completely unsupported (I'm looking at my HD-DVD drive right now), then I'm out $100, rather than $150 as an early adopter tax.

So, in closing, getting a 250GB Slim with Kinect actually saves me money!

I hate my brain.

Kinect is going to be fully integrated into the 360 next gen, count on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw&feature=player_embedded

Orrrrrrr you can wait until you actually fill your 120gb up which will probably be at least a year from now and you can pickup the kinect and Slim both once their prices are cut. There's not really any reason to go out and buy kinect right now unless you have kids. The games are all stupid in my opinion. And there's the adoption question from 3rd parties, this kind of shit rarely ever takes off looking back in console history. And ya i'm also looking at my HD-DVD drive that cost me $200 that i can now get for $30. So for my way of thinking, uless you NEED a 250gb drive and Kinect right now, wait a year and get them when they're both discounted.

@MTP - I remember seeing that head tracking video a while back - that is pretty cool, considering it didn't take much tech wise to do it. @Tank - Good points. I'm at about 12.1 GB free on my 120GB drive, have removed most of my arcade trials. Basically, I'm an installed game, a couple of hefty arcade games and a demo away from being in a lurch. My girl does have two kids, and she isn't very good at games - can't work both thumbs, so maybe this is up their alley? The games are all stupid - I completely agree (Sonic may be fun for a little bit) - I think Child of Eden may be interesting, but that drops in March. @H2Daddy - glad my logic is sound.

Well, I went out to Amazon, and the 250GB Kinect version was no longer offering release date delivery. So, I checked 1 day, with prime is 3.99, no big deal. Said it would be delivered Monday the 8th. I demand instant (or near instant) gratification. So, I didn't order it. Need to hold strong.

Check Best Buy or Gamestop. Hardware is not going to fluctuate price-wise from retailer to retailer.
