It's a fun game, a bit over the top, but not to the extent that some media outlets are portraying it. There is a giddy sense of satisfaction when you get a particularly nice combo going to kill an enemy. I think it's best summed up as Gears Gone Wild. However, it's not without it's faults. First, why can my AI partner do things I can't? Things like adequately use cover - like bind to it, rather than just duck behind it. It seems this is a conscious choice as the game sort of pushes you to keep the action flowing, rather than being overly tactical. You can't really just go balls out into the fray - there is a delicate balance and some measure of tact amidst the chaos - just not of the cover/move to cover variety. The train segment in the first act was kind of "eh, been there, done that". The characters aren't particularly compelling, they sort of feel like your normal generic Epic type badasses with giant shoes. I did appreciate the little twist at the very beginning - where the sidekick character changes (trying not to give away spoilers).
I'm not sure of the staying power of the title. As I've only done the campaign so far, I wonder if the mechanics will become repetitive as the game wears on. I anticipate decent story elements and plot points to keep things going, but we'll see.
So far, so good. I hope to get some more time in on it tonight. Ideally, I can get it finished before the great deluge of March 8 - Dragon Age 2, Major League Baseball 2k11 (I think I'm going to skip The Show this year - can't hit my weight in that damn game!), Torchlight and Yoostar 2.
In other news, my stormtrooper blaster is complete! Well, complete, but it could use a little bit of touch up. Just waiting on my armor and then I'll be consumed with another hobby.
