Virtua Tennis 4 - I've got a love/hate going on with this right now. My early hate was essentially based on the fact that I was playing the game wrong. Once I settled into the baseline, I could win regularly without most shots drifting out of bounds. My current hate is based on the career mode. At it's core, it's great. It's sort of a board game, where you move around with a set number of days before the next major competition. You also have 'stars', which is basically experience points. You need a set number of stars to qualify for an event. In this time, you can train, do charity events, play exhibition games, or take part in small tournaments. exhibition games, tournaments and charity events gain stars. Training does not, so you need to balance that out. You can also rest to build up your condition. There is also the concept of 'tickets'. These let you move around the game board. They come in 1, 2, 3, and 4 space increments. Say you're on a spot, and there is a tournament 2 spots away, but you only have 3 spot tickets, you're SOL. You can't backtrack on the board. Sometimes, it's impossible to get all the stars. I made it to the major tournament once, and didn't have enough stars, so I had to do a qualifying tournament. This of co, your own skills, and the game board. Most of the time, I'm opting to do an event for stars, which means my skill levels aren't increasing. When I'm actually playing the game, it's fun - nothing earth shattering, but fun. However, I have to jump through so many hoops to just play that it feels cumbersome. It's a good idea, but in practice, it needs more balance.
LA Noire - I've only got about an hour and change into this one, so I can't offer too much. First off, I was hoping for more out of the dialog - I feel kind of limited by the Truth, Doubt, Lie options. I think this just requires me to settle more into the dynamic and then I'll be fine. Aside from that, it's a little more Rockstar than I was hoping for. I know I'll sound crazy, but I was hoping for a little less of the GTA vibe. Having my partner drive is certainly welcome, but I would have appreciated something a bit different in the side cases - I don't know - hard to explain. Anyway, I have a feeling that this one will keep my interest.
Witcher 2 - I totally spaced on this release! I may give it a couple of weeks to get through Arcania and LA Noire before settling into this one.
I still need to rip the shrinkwrap off of Dead Space 2, Fable 3, Crysis 2, SOCOM 4, Bioshock 2 and Dead Rising 2, among others. I'm thinking my decision to hold off on Brink, First Templar, and Lego Pirates was a good one.
