I just encountered a freaking weird freak out moment, and randomly had everything fall into place.
I'm putting together some financial docs - tax season and all. I decided I would get the current balance of my two 401(k) accounts to determine if I wanted to do some tax saving shifting of those into Roth dealys or something. My modus operandi has been quit a company, leave the 401(k). It's not a financial panther plan, just laziness. So, for one, I can't remember my login details, so I can't see anything. I never bothered updating my address, but the statements still get redirected here, so I had an idea of what I was looking at, just didn't remember the login information online. The second one, I can't find my December 2010 statement, but I could find one from 2 years ago. I register for online access, and pull up my account. 0 balance. Now, it wasn't a ton of money, but a nice little chunk. I start to panic.
My ass been identity thefted!
(this was a 401(k) with an unscrupulous company that got caught up in the bailout crap - yes, I left before that started, and no, I wasn't in the division that almost brought the financial world to the stone age. My next thought was:
Those turds stole my money to finance a cocaine and hooker fueled balloon ride!
So I decide to call. I enter my information, and then get a recording saying "we have a problem with accessing your account, please try again during business hours" - this is weird as I called at 3:15pm. I'm really panicking at this point, and decide to call my first 401(k) to go ahead and change my address. I enter my information and it says:
"To access your evil company plan, press 1, to access the one you thought you were calling about, press 2". So, it looks like my account changed hands, and I spaced on the notice. Everything is fine, the account has actually done better than I remember the last time I checked. Just what are the freaking odds that you lose thousands of dollars from one institution and blindly find it at another?
I'm kinda feeling lucky at the moment. A friend of mine is on vacation in Vegas. I told him put $100 on red and it hit. Maybe it's time I bring up the girl/girl idea with my lady again!
