Shared on Mon, 11/21/2011 - 09:48Friday afternoon, I'm texting with my old roommate from Alabama. I say to him "what I really want to see happen is for Oklahoma State to lose tonight, then Oregon and Oklahoma to lose tomorrow. A Clemson loss would help as well". Damn if it didn't all happen.
Now, Bama is looking like a lock for the BCS game. Sure, there are some oddities about it, but looking at it objectively:
#1 LSU - Undefeated - no question about going to the BCSCG if they win out.
#2 Alabama - 1 loss to #1 LSU by 3 points in overtime at home. Blowout win over #3 Arkansas at home. Good win over #19 Penn State away. Wrecked Florida's team away, but that doesn't mean much with UF's record.
#3 Arkansas - Blowout loss to #2 on the road. Blowout win over #24 Auburn. Blowout win at home against #14 South Carolina.
#4 Oklahoma State - Overtime loss to unranked Iowa State away. Blowout win at home versus #18 Baylor (and possibly the best player in college football this year). Good win over #11 Kansas State at home.
#5 Virginia Tech - No quality wins. Blowout loss to #17 Clemson.
#6 Stanford - Blowout loss to #10 Oregon. Good win over USC (unranked in BCS, but #10 in the AP).
As it stands currently, it looks like Alabama, Arkansas and Oklahoma State have the best bodies of work to be considered the #2 team. Arkansas gets a shot at LSU this weekend, Oklahoma State has a big game against Oklahoma. Assuming an LSU win over Arkansas, an Oklahoma win over Oklahoma State, and an Alabama win over Auburn, it really leaves only Alabama.
Now, if Arkansas beats LSU, that would probably put Alabama into the SECCG against UGA. Not a bad game. A win there should cement Bama in the BCSCG.
If LSU beats Arkansas, they stay at #1, no real discussion there. However, if Arkansas beats LSU and Auburn beats Alabama, is it Arkansas #1, LSU #2? What if Oklahoma State wins?
To me, it looks like the only way we don't have an SEC rematch in the BCS is if Auburn beats Alabama, Arkansas beats LSU then loses to UGA and Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma.
From my crimson colored glasses, I'm assuming a Bama victory this weekend, but I fully expect Auburn to come out pissed off and ready to play. I'm thinking LSU wins, but Arkansas has been playing them tough the past few years, so who knows. I *think* Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State.
Guess we'll just have to see how it plays out.
