Goodbye EB

Aonon

So I am ditching EB this year. I am going to reserve a copy of the “Head in a Box” edition of Halo3 at my local Blockbuster. They are staying open an extra hour on the 24th. It’s a five minute walk away, and should be less of a Halo3 fan boy mob than waiting for six hours outside EB in the mall.

For years now I have been a supporter of the Tony Hawk series of skateboarding games. They are fun and have filled many and hour of game time for my wife and I. Tomorrow I intend to pick up SKATE and transition into a more laid back world of skating.  I am a big fan of open games, games where you are given the freedom to do what ever you want. The SKATE environment looks to fill those criteria quite nicely. Heck it almost has no unlockables, which I am sure some of you are wondering what the point is. I can visualize my own carrot on a stick thank you very much.

I never cared for skateboard games, I used to skateboard as a kid (when I was 9-12 or so) and then lost interest. I played Project 8 demo and liked it but not enough to buy it. You talk about Skate being more "laid back" actually has me a little interested, I might have to check it out. and I have never liked EB, Gamestop, or any company that sells games. I don't like being hassled to buy crap I don't want, or reserve a game. I also don't like the dirty Timmy crowd here at my local Gamestop. Whenever I go there it's some kid who hasn't showered for a week and smells like mildew looking through the Xbox 360 games. Call me self conscious but I don't want to be considered a peer to this kid. I remember when Halo 2 came out, I went to the same store to pick up a PC game (I think it was Everquest 2?) and the line was out the door with soccer moms and long-haired middle school kids. No thanks.. I haven't reserved my copy yet. I didn't even think of Blockbuster, might try them out.

I hear a lot of people describe what you have about the Video game chain stores. But I have never had and EB emloyee hassle me. You dead on about the kids though.

I wouldn't mind if they just did the one-liner: "Do you want to reserve any games?" But they always take it too far--"Are you sure? Don't you like Halo? What kind of games do you like?" No dude, I already paid you, just hand me my bag and let me get out of here. The atmosphere just went from 'pleasant' to 'annoyingly uncomfortable'.
