Biscuits one week update (8 days actually)

Well I've had Biscuit for 8 days now.  I noticed she had been less playful for a couple of days.  Thursday she'd chase her ball and play.  Friday she wouldnt play as long.  Saturday she'd only take a couple of steps and then come back and lay down.  Immediately I was concerned, I was pretty much positive she had parvo.  She tested positive for it dammit.  She'd also lost 1.3lbs since her very first vet visit on Tuesday.  So in 5 days a puppy that had the big puppy belly and filled out her collar looked gaunt and had no more puppy belly.  Went from 17.5lbs to 16.2lbs.  Yikes!

Thats Biscuit today.  She's laying in the garage on a spare bed because its really a lot more comfortable than a tile floor.  More comfortable for my fiance and I.  We've been spending a lot of time with a 20cc syringe basically shooting gatorade and water down the dogs throat.  The vet said parvo doesnt generally kill the dog itself, its the other bacteria that come while the dog has parvo and dehydration.  We can get about 40cc's of liquid in her and then she goes outside to throw it all right back up.  We decided to call the vet for a Sunday visit so we can get an IV started in her.  This is the time when having a nurse for a fiance comes in handy.  She knows how to do all that medical stuff.

So far we've spent about $150 and I imagine by the time the vet visit is over today it'll be at least $100 more.  She's getting to be a pricey pound puppy.  I could have bought a lab or something from a breeder for $200-$400, but I chose to get the mutt from the pound.  I'll do everything I can to save Biscuit, I didnt save her from being euthanised only to die from parvo.

after Biscuit gets through this, you might want to look into Dog health insurance. There are a ton of providers now. Hell your vet might even have one he will recommend.

We just got back from the Vet a little bit ago, she got an IV catheter in her left front leg. And she got some fancy purple bandages. We got 3 bags of saline solution to give her because pretty much the only thing we can do is battle the dehydration. Only $115 for a Sunday visit. Thats cheaper than I thought it would be.

If you got her from a pound then THEY should be responsible! When animals are taken to the pound they are quarantined until their health has been checked. At least let the pound know--all the other dogs there are at risk of getting/having parvo!! And don't forget: the parvo virus can live up to 6 mos. in your house and in the yard--Bleach kills it (and your grass)!!

Make sure to also get canned chicken and rice food for her, it's bland but easy on the stomach. Also get some probiotics. http://www.vitasprings.com/caninedophilus-dogs-20ml-natren.html Since parvo attacks the digestive system, the probiotics help to restore normal healthy digestion. You have to give it to her twice a day with her food, once she starts eating again of course. And antibiotics of course, if you haven't already. That's all I can remember from when Obi had parvo...but he pulled through and is healthy as can be now. Keeping you guys in my thoughts, Biscuit is a lucky puppy to have you as her owner. :)

Forgot to add, you have to pick up every piece of poo in your yard, and bleach every surface your puppy may have peed on, poo'd on, licked, etc. You need to throw away any toys, don't bother buying any new ones for a few weeks either. And if she used your yard for going potty, you have to bleach the entire thing. Bleach is the only thing that will kill parvo. For your yard, use one of those Miracle Grow sprayer things that attaches to your garden hose. Fill it up with bleach instead of MG, and hose the whole yard down. You'll need a few gallons of bleach, depending upon the size of your yard. One little sprayer full of bleach will do about a 10x5 ft area...it's not fun and it is time consuming, but it will kill the virus and your puppy won't get sick again, and neither will any other dogs.

I got some baby food for her earlier and some of that single grain rice junk. We've got 700ml of IV fluid into her over the last few hours and since then she's gotten up to go pee on her own two times and even walked around the yard a bit. She's noticeably heavier which is good and now her tummy is growling. I notified the pound I got her from pretty much as soon as I left the vet with the positive test result. There are about 15 other dogs there under a year old that they should watch out for.

Biscuit is adorable. She is so lucky to have found you both. To be loved is wonderful. I hope and pray all works out for her and she'll soon be a chubby little pestilence in your lives again. Good luck!
