So last night we were in the Emergency Room till around 10pm or so until they managed to find a room for her. She went to one of the regular floors, but her Neurologist said it was not a good enough room and she needed more observation so they moved her down to the intenstive care unit. Which is good.
Last night my sister said it was probably the best night of sleep my mother has gotten. It was defiantely because it was the first time in 6 months she hasn't gotten a phone call in the middle of the night from my grandmother and she at ease knowing that there were people keeping a eye on her all night.
My grandmother was mildly combative in the ER with everyone, but we managed to get to eat half a turkey sandwhich and 2 cans of ginger ale, it was the first food and drink she had, had all day. (14 hours without anything). She was really fighting sleep I have to say. She had alot of meds that would have floored most people but she was fightiing it off.
So here is todays details. I got the results of her CT scan from yesterday, she has what they call and "Enhancing tumor" which means its big and aggresive, so big that its currently located in her right frontal/temporal region, and big eniough that it is causing a deviating shift in her brain structures. It is also invasive enough that it has apparently started to invade the parietal bone of her skull, which is one of the bones of the skull that forms the cranial space wjhere the brain sites. Which basically means, its as bad as it can get. The tumor is hemoraging in places, causing swelling in the region of the brain and thats never good. She has some drooping in her eye, which is getting worse and worse.
I actually just got off the phone with my sister and she talked to the docs today. My big sis is a RN, so we are both more realistic that the rest of the family. They originally found a mass in her righ tlung as well, but that has been shown to have not been there at all.
They are saying she has Primary site, Brain Cancer, which is unusual. Not unheard of though, but usually Brain Cancer is caused by metastatic cancer from another area of the body and then rooting in the brain. Her scans of her chest, abdomen and pelvis found no other sites of cancer. So its all in the head.
She is not doing well, I would be surprised if she makes it to the end of next week. She is getting a MRI tomorrow to see what the tumor is comprised of. She might end up with a craniotomy, but thats something we will decide on later.
Sadly, both my sister and I agree in that we feel Grandma isn't really there any more. She hasn't been for a while. Now its time to do whats right for her where we can. As a family they will decide what treatment is going to be done if any, but I don't see personally that hse should be put through to much physically if possible.
Thanks again all...
I need a vacation.
