Some examples of the former would be 40 Year Old Virgin, The Princess Bride, and well frankly anything by Monty Python. Unfortunately for Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, their latest creation Step Brothers - as a whole - falls into the latter category.
The story tells the tale of two 9 year old boys trapped in the bodies of 40 year olds. They haven’t moved out of their parents homes, they still pick their noses, and flood their food with ketchup. Their parents are in denial, hoping that they will grow out of it eventually, and just deal with the endless stream of stupid behavior and profanity that flows from these two morons. After a brief meeting at some conference, the parents meet, fall into love (after falling into bed – more than a bit awkward to watch), and then move in together. That means that moron 1 meets moron 2, and the stupid gets amped up to a whole new level.
Don’t get me wrong – there were some LOL moments. However, that was more because I kept seeing my two boys and their endless mind numbing bickering happening onscreen but in the bodies of grown men, which was funny. And, prop nutsack aside (at least I pray that’s what it was), seeing Will Ferrell tea bag a set of drums got me to laugh. But eventually, around the 45-minute mark, it got old. I mean, it got really old. Old as in just waiting for it to be over, and over soon.
With most comedies, having it on Blu-Ray (thank GOD only from Netflix…if I paid for this movie, I’d have been pissed) doesn’t really mean jack. The picture was crisp, the audio strong, but neither really add anything to the experience. I’d venture into the extras of the movie, but would rather stab my eyes out with dinner forks. So DVD or Blu-Ray, you get the same suckage out of the disc.
Final word? Unless you’re drunk and feeling your mentality dropping fast to Timmy-level, avoid this movie. It’s really not worth the hour and a half spent trying to enjoy it, and probably trying in vain.
