1653 - Oliver Cromwell became lord protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
1773 - The Boston Tea Party took place.
1916 - Grigori Rasputin assassinated by a group of noble Russian conspirators.
1920 - One of the deadliest earthquakes in history hit the Gansu province in China. The 8.6 quake killed 200,000 people.
1944 - The Battle of the Bulge during World War II began in Belgium.
1990 - Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected president of Haiti in the country's first democratic elections.
2000 - Colin Powell was selected to become the first African-American secretary of state.

But more importantly,

1994 - Balek said those two words that forever change a man's life ... "I do."

To the love of my life, my best friend, my truest confidant, the one who challenges me and inspires me, who forces me (many times against my will) to be a better person, husband, and father...thank you for saying "Yes".

Happy anniversary for the other day. Also, from South Arica.... Afrikaners traditionally celebrated 16 December as the Day of the Vow, remembering the day in 1838 when a group of Voortrekkers defeated a Zulu army at the Battle of Blood River, while ANC activists commemorated it as the day in 1961 when the ANC started to arm its soldiers to overthrow Apartheid. In the new South Africa's it's a day of reconciliation, a day to focus on overcoming the conflicts of the past and building a new nation
