Engineering At Its Best

I know this statement will stir up some shit from the 2o2p crew down south, but NASCAR is good for one thing and one thing only - the wrecks.    Everything else is a bunch of left turns with a few 20 second tire changes for giggles thrown in.  Now, I'm not including the tailgating that happens at those events into that evaluation...those, from what I've heard, are epic.  But the actual race itself...Zzzzzzzzz.

One thing that does amaze me tho' is the engineering that goes into those cars.  Here you have a vehicle that is built for one thing - speed.  But, you also have to have it safe at those speeds for the driver and the other drivers on the track.  Because...well, sometimes those wrecks I mentioned above are as epic as the pre-race parties.

The idea he not only lived through that kind of a crash, but hopped out of the car while it was on fire and jogged off the track is just awesome.  So, regardless of my thoughts on the sport (and I'll use that lightly), I tip my hats to the engineers who make the cars.

That's a heck of a wreck, wow... I can't believe he ran away from that one either.

That crash was scary. There is some impressive engineering put into those cars to both go fast and crash. There’s also some cool engineering that goes into the track elements, like shock dampening barrier walls. Whoever designed the track’s perimeter fencing should get a big pat on the back this week. The fence kept the big pieces of that car from ending up in the stands. The fact no one was seriously injured is amazing. It was an exciting finish (as was the Nationwide race Sat). I’d rather have seen the race end with all four of Edwards’ wheels on the pavement.
