We have all done it – probably more often than we like – but it’s just human nature. We have imagination, and with that comes the ability to hope and dream. I had just such an occasion yesterday, but fortunately this is one of those times when the hope was met, and the expectation reached and exceeded.
I had hoped 300 would be entertaining. I was expecting a typical action movie – well, more than typical per se based on the hype, but still basically an action movie. What I received was a mind-blowing assault on the senses beyond my wildest hopes and expectations.
I hate spoilers, and know not everyone had the chance to rush out and see the movie this past weekend (even tho’ MANY did, setting a new March release record for any movie to date), so I won’t post any of the plot details or surprises that await those who do take it in. What I can do is try to convey the emotions you may find when you see the movie.
The first is shock. I, like many I will guess, am not a history buff. I don’t know or appreciate how different cultures may have been throughout the ages. However, this movie paints a picture of what a Spartan was with absolute clarity, and it’s not what I would consider timid. However, it set the stage perfectly for the mood, attitude, and backdrop for the entire story that followed.
Then comes the awe. The cinematography was simply outstanding. Everyone knows the movie is based on a Frank Miller graphic novel (the same fellow who did Sin City), and the movie’s roots were readily apparent in its visual presentation. The colors palette used was subdued and earthy, and gave a gritty feeling to the audience. There was a big heaping use of slow motion through the film (perhaps, as the films only slight negative, a bit too much) that made it easier to focus on the individual parts of the fight scenes. Finally, the special effects were top notch. Too often I felt my eyes widen and heart race a tad when a given effect took hold and just clicked.
Finally, a quick hit of sadness and then pride. I won’t elaborate on these, but the rapid transition between the two I felt was well crafted, and appreciated by me.
All in all, a movie not to be missed by anyone who appreciates a solid action flick, or loves unique filming in a movie. I’m fortunate to fall into both camps.
