While on the Elliptical of Death™ this morning, the news was giving a sneak peak at the top employer in the country according to Fortune magazine: Google. What makes Google the place to work for?
Well, it’s all about the bennys – and I’m not talking Benjamins. The benefits the employees there get are truly outside the normal corporate “box”. Let’s start with what gets most people motivated: free stuff. There’s a TON of it. Free food, and not just a basket of fruit in a common pantry, but 17 gourmet restaurants cooking up food to order all day and night. You name it, they make it. Feeling a little under the weather? That’s not a reason to stay home out of work – go to one of 5 free doctors on-site. Need a trim, that’s OK, there’s a free barber shop and stylist on staff. The list goes on and on.
Then there’s the atmosphere. It’s what the employees decide they want. Want to work in your PJs, that’s ok with Google…and, well if it means this
well, all the better! Umm…where was I?
Have a favorite pet … well as long as your co-workers don’t mind, bring him or her with you for a bit of love throughout the day.
Anyways, it got me thinking – do I love my job? Truth be told, I’m happier here than I’ve been at any of my previous employers, so I’d say yes – for the most part. Yes there’s the typical office politics in play that are starting to get old. Got a bitchy subordinate that I’d just rather get rid of, but has too much unique experience and a bond with my supervisor to be able to pull off, but overall it’s a great place to work with (#2 in NJ in 2005, and #1 in 2004 via NJBiz.com). So yeah, it could be better, but overall it’s much more like Google than not like it, so I shouldn’t complain eh?
Oh, by the way, if you’re interested in getting a job at Google, better rub that lucky rabbit’s foot. The company receives over 1 million applications annually for little over 50,000 jobs.
