Interview Anxiety

I'm trying to think of things that I hate more than interviewing, and I'm coming up blank.  I suppose the kidney stone episodes would rank a close second...

Next week I'll be interviewing for a new position in another company for the first time in almost 7 years.  Several things are making that really challenging to accept and 'just do it'.  First and foremost, we all know the current health of the economy and how most companies are struggling to stay afloat, let alone actually be in a position where they are expanding.  Also, my current company is doing remarkably well, just having posted the 33rd consecutive quarter of double digit sales growth - no small accomplishment.  This year we were ranked the 25th best company to work for in the United States, and have consistently been the number 1 or 2 best company in the state.  Pay is good, benefits are outstanding.  So I know what you're all asking...why the fuck am I considering leaving?

Over the course of the past year or so, the managerial situation in my current gig has slowly but steadily degraded to a point where I just need to move on.  My manager and her boss (who happens to be a very tenured VP with the organization) are at severe odds.  The VP holds absolute no regard for our organization or the value it brings to the company.  He's an attorney, and behaves like one.  He doesn't collaborate with his employees, he arbitrates - normally in a barking, condescending manner.  In short, he's a total tool.  But he also holds absolute power over my career, both current and future.  And the simple fact is it's going nowhere fast.  I could easily ride it out, hope he retires sometime in the next 10 years or so, and then potentially have a modicum of upward momentum.  But to hell with that...

So the new position is a definate promotion - two levels in fact - with a company that also has a long standing history within the industry.  The responsiblities are right within my wheelhouse.  In fact, most the the responsiblities are percisely what I'm doing now just with a grander scale.  Short term the position will involve quite a bit of travel, only because I'll have dotted line responsiblity over folks in 29 different facilities - but it gives me an excuse to finally see Tokyo and the land down under!  :)

So, we'll see what they can offer up.  But if the total compensation package fits, I think it'll be time to say goodbye and start another step in the career next month...

Good luck...life is too short to work for a person that you can't respect.
