No, I mean Dead Space. Today, after quite some time, I finally finished the game. For me, that's an accomplishment. I can probably count on one hand the number of games that I have taken from start to finish and been able to watch the end credits. Normally, I get distracted by the latest and greatest release and drop older games like a bad habit. Fortunately for me, Dead Space held me in just like a good book does with it's stellar story, impecable presentation, and a wife adding to the fear with her own "BOO!" from time to time.
The game has been either nominated or awarded runner-up marks for GotY recently, and I can now say with educated assurance that it earned every one of those nods. Not since Bioshock has a single-player game pulled me in and made me want to play, not out of obligation or feeling like I needed to make the $60 purchase worth it, but because I wanted to. I wanted to get around the next corner, I wanted to lay waste to another necromorph in fun and amusing ways. But most of all, I wanted to see where the story was going. What caused the tradegy to happen, how could I stop it, and what would the game throw at me next.
All in all, an absolutely wonderful experience, and one that I will likely run through again for a trophy or two that I missed on the first run by. That is, after I get it back ... I need to lend it out to a co-worker in trade for his copy of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune which I started today. I have a funny feeling I'll be writing another post like this in a few weeks based on what I've already seen...but that's another blog.
