Now I'm a fan of the whole tactical-style FPS genre as a whole, having broken my teeth on the original Rainbow Six way back when, and loved the Splinter Cell series as it was developed. But in what little I've played it so far, the newest edition to the portfolio from Ubisoft has done nothing but impress me. To put that into some light as well - I'm coming off of playing Gears of War, which has won and will undoubtedly win more Game of the Year awards in the upcoming days and months.
The graphics of the game, while perhaps not necessarily as visually impressive as Gears of War, are by no means second rate. The developers have used the engine very well to give a realistic and gritty feeling to the areas I've played to date. The sound is just awesome, and when pumped through a 5.1 surround system ... it's just audio bliss. The controls are very intuitive, and I actually like the cover system even more than that in Gears of War. Originally (that is, in the first few minutes of playing) I wouldn't have said so, but now after some time it feels more realistic in nature - something which I appreciate.
I've played through a few missions in the single player campaign, and just last night enjoyed my first co-op experience with a single friend online. WOW. Let me say that again. WOW. Even with just two of us in communication, I truly had that feeling of being a tactical operative going through a hostage rescue mission. I'm now just dying to get another two people in on some of the later missions of the game and get the most out of the experience. If it is anything like last night, I'm going to be one happy camper.
Look for me in Vegas for some time to come (although I'm sure GoW and VP will still get their due). If you see me, feel free to shoot me up with an invite or join in on some co-op fun.
