Some New Art and Some Bat Statues

Well its the end of the month and I wanted to get one more post in before August. So this is a hodge podge...or what ever they call it. :lol:

Ok first up is a quick sketch that came out of a debate with a fellow comic book geek, who was better, DC's Green Arrow or Marvel's Hawkeye. I have enjoyed them both at different times. In my younger days I was a true blue Hawkeye fan. Loved em as the purple archer as well as the red and blue Goliath. However, in my more adult years, Green Arrow, with his robin hood origin story line, his strong convictions to his political and moral beliefs, in other words his complexity, have made him much more appealing to me. What about you? Either way I thought it would be fun to envision a battle between the two. :D

Second up is a little ditty I sketched up a few weeks ago. I call it my Robot Angel. Could make for a cool full color piece some day.

Last up is a couple shots of my growing Batman Black and White statue collection. These are sculptures of the Dark Knight based on famous Artist interpretations through time. They come out almost once a month or so, I dont get them all but i get the ones based on the likeness of artist I like. Ill list above each pic the artist/character style each one is based on.

BAT





Bats based on the very first image of him drawn by Bob Kane one of his first creators!

Here Bats is based on the incredibly talented visionary, Mike Mignola. Mike is best known for his creation Hellboy. The thing that makes this statue so amazing for me is the way they painted the figure so as to truly make it look like it was a 3 D version of a 2 D Mike Mignola drawing, just love it.



The classic Frank Miller Batman from the now classic The Dark Knight Returns Graphic Novel.



Paul Pope is a wild new artist on the comics scene. His work on the Trade Paperback "Batman Year 100" was unique and fresh. His interpretation of Bats is both retro and futuristic. I love his look for Batman and I loved his art in that story. Definitely a Bat book not to be missed.



Steve Rude is one of my all time favorite comicbook artist. This statue is based on his stylings for the character. You can see his interpretation of bats as well as Superman in the Worlds Finest Trade PaperBack. A really good book with a fun story where Supes and Bats trade enemies as well as cities. :lol:

thanks for the breakdown man. Thats kind of what I do...but choosing a color palette for a piece is usually what kicks my ass the hardest.

Awesome figs Bat! I wish I had more room for that kind of stuff. Most of my fun things are in storage or the closet. Some day I will put my full geekiness on display for the world to see! :D And great art work as usual. Always an inspiration to sig and photoshop whores everywhere! LOL :)

A BatSUG would kick ass. The UNKL guys are here in Portland and I've been to a few of their custom showings. I could see a BatSUG fitting right in.

Good Stuff! Nice dynamic poses! Love those batman statues. I haven't been too inspired lately, and have dropped down to just drawing one day a week... :^( Need to get back on it, and also need to get some more doodle paper! Will hopefully have something up by the end of the week!

Sweet post as usual man. Got an artsy question for you. Meant to ask this earlier, but forgot. For the Section 3 cover you did, is there a method to your digital coloring method? gradient tweaking or is it all straight up paintbrush stuff?

Wilderz, thanks dude. Hey dont wig out if your not drawing as often. I find the more I stress myself on it the more I find ways to avoid it. Just try to get yourself into a routine. Like every evening after dinner for 30 min, or every morning before you start work. Something that becomes a routine tends to get maintained better. Think of it as exercise for your creativity. :D Thanks for the props Gatsu. On the coloring tip, well its a little bit of everything I guess. First i separate out the black line art and get it on its own layer. Then I usually place down blocks of flat color on the basic shapes of the piece. Then I do shading over that on another layer. For the shading sometimes I use brushes, some times i create a selection of an area, usually with the pen tool, then use gradients to blend in the shading. Sometimes an additional layer on top for highlights, again some done with brush others with selections and the gradient tool. Background i usually treat separate from the figures in the piece so that i can change it around or adjust the color of it easily. I also bring in photos of textures I have taken like rocks, or tree bark, or metal and add that over areas using the blending layers. Anyway thats the gist of it. I keep saying I will post up a tutorial some day. I will try to do that some time soon. :D - BAT
