Shared on Sat, 05/24/2008 - 03:27I've been pretty damn busy lately with the comic coloring work but I've been trying to make time to work on my own stuff too. Something I've been wanting to get back into for a while now has been inking and painting traditionally. Working digitally definitely has it perks, but I miss actually getting my hands dirty and also not having Layers and an Undo key to fix any mistakes I may make. It's great to have but I feel like it becomes a crutch when you really don't have to worry about fucking up. So last night I busted out my brushes, inks and markers and just went nuts for several hours. I fucked up a lot, but I still had fun and was fairly happy with a few pieces. I've recently become a huge fan of a comic artist named Mitch Breitweiser. He does some amazing brushwork with inks and goauches and posts a new sketch on his website almost everyday. Always incredible stuff. I'd like to get to that point where I can just confidently bust out a sketch with inks.
One of the pieces I did last night was a fast sketch of DC's Captain Marvel done with brush and Prismacolor markers. Now, I was somewhat happy with it, but it fell short of what I was going for. So tonight I decided to scan it into Photoshop and using the grayscale as a guide, just completely redo it. Heh, right back to my crutch. The result though is a piece I am much happier with:
And the ink/marker version:
