Best Buy Scam

Over the last 12 months I’ve purchased a surround sound receiver, an Xbox 360, a front loading washer, a 60” Sony television and various other smaller purchases at my local Best Buy store. I’ve always liked Best Buy. They have a very reasonable selection and the sales people (in my area at least) are moderately helpful without being a nuisance.

Back around the time I bought my Yamaha YSP-800 I signed up for a Best Buy Rewards Zone card. Why not? I thought to myself. I do a decent amount of business there, though at the time I had no idea how much would be coming. I used it with every purchase I made there, big or small, and even saw a couple of small coupons come my way for $5 off any purchase. Then, about the time I bought the TV it appeared that my account had been “hijacked” by some other person. After fussing with the salesman for some time I ended up just getting a new account started.

The TV was a pretty large purchase and a couple of weeks later I checked my Reward Zone account online to see that I had a $50 certificate waiting for me. It had to be used by July (If I remember right) and since I had no immediate needs I figured I’d put it off until Forza2 came out and apply it to that. Well, end of May comes around and guess what? I can’t log into my Reward Zone account online anymore. I call customer “service” and discover that my account has once again been assigned to someone else.
After spending more then an hour on the phone I managed to have the CS rep locate every purchase I had made for the past year. She even offered to allocate an additional 1000 points to my account for my trouble.

Now here we are at the end of June. I decide to go pick up a copy of Shadowrun and think “Hey, let’s print off that coupon”. Guess what? You can see where this is going I bet. No luck logging in again. So I call the BB rep and they tell me that my case is still being investigated a month later.

“When can I expect to get this resolved?”

“We don’t have any control over that. It’s been forwarded to the appropriate dept. and is in their hands now.”

This sounds like I’ll never get that credit. Until I do, I will never darken the door of a Best Buy again. It’s a shame really, that store was always like a Toys R Us for me.

I have bad Best Buy stories that would curdle the milk in your fridge. I sympathize with you, man

Wow! I've been in the Reward Zone program since it started and have never had a problem...I hope they get it fixed for you and give you all your credits. On a related note, I have a friend that had to fight with the Credit Bureau and Best Buy because they accidentally closed her credit account as "Deceased". It caused a big mess on her credit record...

Sucks that you're having issues with it. I haven't ever run into a problem... In fact, your story made me go online to check for the rewards from a recent new camcorder for my department at work - and voila, there was sitting a $50 certificate. Hope you get it straightened out soon. B.

Nice blog.... I hate BB for different reasons from the Reward Zone program. I too have spent a lot of $$$$ there, yet I am treated like s--- at almost every turn. From silly exceptions on coupons (good on Movie DVDs but not TV DVDs), to bad advice (yeah that'll work - when it doesnt), to crappy service... can't stand them. Problem is Circuit City sucks WORSE (if that's possible). Sign - Amazon.com I guess :)

My wife purchased a copy of Rainbow6:Eagle Watch for me 6 or 7 years ago (back when R6 games were actually 1 shot, one kill). It was the sweetest gesture as she did some research and asked around, something she doesn't do much. Problem was, it would work with my current hardware. I even had a copy of the e-mail the tech support people sent me. Back to Best Buy we go. long story short, they would only trade in for the same product... which doesn't work. I asked him at the time, "So you willing to forgo tens of thousands of dollars of my purchases over my lifetime at your store by not allowing me to trade this game in for something of equal value?" I've never been back.

My coupons come in the mail. I don't know why that is, but I never have any issues. :(
