Cool New Device

I've admittedly come into the modern age a bit slowly when it comes to cell phones.  We only purchased our first one a few years ago due to job requirements and my wife and I lived off of that phone for several years before finally breaking down and getting one for me.  Even still, I rarely have my phone with me at all times.  When I first got it I basically left it in my car 90% of the time.  I might as well have had an old bag phone.  Recently I've been trying to carry it around with me more.  It seems more and more people have my cell number and prefer to call me on that line.  It's still hard to get used to for me though.  If I'm at work, it's quite likely my cell phone is still out in the car and if I'm home it's almost always sitting on a dresser in the bedroom.  If I get a call at home on it I will almost certainly not hear it ring.

We've recently considered getting rid of our home phone all together.  We rarely get calls on our home phone and the $50/month we spend on it seems to be a waste.  Of course if we did that, I'd have to learn to be more diligent in keeping my cell phone with me at all times.  Or would I........?

On Monday I purchased the most handy device I've come across in a while.  It's the XLink Bluetooth Gateway.

This handy little contraption will allow you to use your home phone with your cell phone.  It connects to your home phone system between the wall outlet and the phone and then connects to your cell phone via Bluetooth.  I purchased the version that allows you to mix in the existing land line service so I can use my home phone system for either.  It allows up to 3 Bluetooth cell phone connections so I can connect the wife's phone as well.  I've only received one call on it so far and the call quality was a little staticy.  It might have been because my phone was sitting near the extreme end of the range of the device at the time, but the important thing is that I didn't miss my call.  I'm leaving the phone on the counter right next to it now and that will hopefully improve the call quality.  As long as I hear the phone ring though I can at least answer it long enough to switch to my cell phone if I want.  So far I'm pretty happy with it, it's an ingenious device and perfect for lazy guys like me who don't always have a cell phone in their pocket at home.

Hmm, very interesting. I have been looking for an adapter that would allow me to use a regular desk phone with my Blackberry in the office. This might just do it.

I've never had a home phone. I don't really have any issues with it. At work its in my desk drawer. at home it's in my pocket or on a shelf in the living room. The other day though it fell out of my pocket and between the couch cushions. The battery had died so I had no way to find it for a while. I felt cut off from the world, it was terrible. So I got onto messenger and had my sister call my wife at work to see if she knew where it was........loser(me)

Thanks for sharing, give us an update on the staticy thing. So does your cell phone still ring also if your in range of the XLink?

Yes the cell phone still rings. The caller ID works as well. The ID on my phone shows the Xlink on the top line and the number of the incoming call on the lower line. You can also use the home phone to place outgoing calls. You select "flash -1" or "flash"-2, etc. depending on which cell phone you want to place the call with.
