I'm not really counting the smaller local LANs that I went to all the time back in Halo CE days. I'm thinking more site oriented events where people have come from all across the country to do something that would otherwise be a more comfortable experience at home. I've been to Dallas (which is where I'm heading towards this weekend) Raleigh, Chicago, Ft. Wayne and co-hosted a few events here in Indianapolis. I'm always amazed that people would fly in or drive for hours to go to one of these events, but at the same time I'm always one of those people as well so maybe it shouldn't surprise me so much.
I'll be driving this time around. It looks to be a total of about 30 hours or so on the road over the next 6 days. I don't really enjoy driving that much but I very much look forward to seeing some old friends once again. I can still remember the first couple of LANs I went to. Ft. Wayne was the first. I can remember being very trepidatious walking into the LAN room not really knowing anyone or what to expect. After Phreak spent the better part of Saturday hitting and kicking me as I continually pwned her in Halo2, I curiously felt more at ease. At this point, when I go to a LAN, I pretty much know the majority of the folks there. This time around there will be a couple of new faces for me. Iknowwhatboyzlike, Moesley and Soup are scheduled to make appearances this time around and I'm very much looking forward to adding their names and faces to the list of site people that I've met.
I guess this is as good a time as any to once again thank Doodi, Smooth, all the site mods, the clan overlords and everyone else who helps make up this site. Because of all of you, I've created some real and lasting friendships that have gone way beyond gaming. I play soccer and basketball every week with the same group of people. I have never been to any of their homes though. I have been to several of the homes of folks from this site and have had many of them in my own home as well. This is a special place.
