Thank You Brett Favre

I'm not a big Packers fan.  I'm not even a real big fan of Brett Favre's.  However, this time of year is the dead zone of sporting news.  Unless you're one of those old men who still likes watching baseball, there's not a lot of anything going on in professional sports.  Fortunately, the Brett Favre soap opera has been able to fill some of that dead time on Sportscenter for the last few weeks and getting us through until NFL camps opened this past weekend.

As I stated already, I'm not a big Favre fan.  I don't think he's anywhere near top 10 QB all time and I'm not real sure he's top 5 even among current players.  I am a fan of the way he plays the game.  I enjoy watching him play in that he reminds me of those Sunday afternoons when me and my buddies would get together to play football out on an open field somewhere.  He always seems like he's having a good time.  That's refreshing when so many other players seem to be taking the game way too seriously.  So as the soap opera of his comeback/not comeback began to unfold, I was a little torn on what side to take.

On the one hand Brett has put the Packers in a very tough position.  They've already prepared for life without Favre and they've been dealing with the will he/won't he retire saga for the last 3 years.  I think it's safe to say they're a little worn out from it all and just want to move on.  On the other hand, even though they think they have a nice replacement in Rodgers and he has put up decent numbers when he's had the chance to play, it's tough to jump into the unknown when you have a known available.  For Brett's part, what do you expect?  When you tell someone you're going to do something, they generally assume that that's what you're going to do.  Why would you be mad at the Packers for following through on your word?  On the flip side, he has put in a lot of time, has been a very very good quarterback and will one day be in the Hall of Fame so maybe he's owed a little more respect if he chooses to continue playing.

I really don't know what to think at this point.  It doesn't seem right that Brett should hold a clip board for the sake of Aaron Rogers, but I can't really blame Green Bay for asking him to.  I don't want to see Favre playing for the Jets or Chiefs but I can also understand he wants to be a starter and has earned that opportunity.  At this point, I don't see how he can start for Green Bay though.  Both sides have continued to lock into their positions to the point that anyone backing down at this point would look soft and that's the one thing you can't have the appearance of in the NFL.  If I were Brett though I think I'd just tell my agent, coaches and family that from here on out, I'm in until they carry me off the field.  I think that's the only way we'll ever see him leave the game.

I too loved watching him play for the same reasons. I was bummed he retired but now am frustrated with what appears to be selfishness even though I don't know him personally or all the reasons why he came back. I don't want to see him in another uniform to be sure. Brett belongs at Lambeua. And that's the way I want to remember him.

if you are saying he is not on "your" top 10 list of QB's...okay...that is your opinion, but to not be recognized as one of the top 10 qb's of all time...You have started to eat some "special cookies" and need to stop..

I don't think it matters if he's the best QB in the history or the 10th best or the 20th best. He's been pulling these media stunts for a couple years now and it's old. Retire or don't retire and then be done with it.

My list is more based on - If I were to build a team from scratch, what player do I take to start as my QB? Not, which player will look good to the FFL geeks. Stats aren't everything. Again, I'm not saying he isn't a great QB. I just have several more guys I'd take ahead of him if I were building a "Dream Team"

They should let him come back and be the starting QB with the understanding that if he has a bad game or two, he gets benched in favor or Rodgers. Let him get embarrassed when all can see his skills are no longer there.

I think they could do a good transition........play farve to start the first half and rodgers for the 2nd half and see how things work out. They both get to play, and if one is playing like shit, they take them out early and replace them.

If you retire, stay retired. Jordan, Sandberg, Carlton, Rodman, etc. etc.

so I guess his stats have nothing to do with his lack of appearance on your list?
