The Wheels On The Bus Go Round and Round

On my way into work today I passed a SUV that had a half dozen kids of so in it, one of whom parents were taking them to school. A moment later I came to an intersection where a couple of dozen school buses pass by every morning. It got me thinking. Do we really need school buses anymore?

According to wiki the first school bus was a horse drawn wagon used in the 1820s. I can imagine at that time and in the 150 years following that a school bus was probably the only reasonable way to get children to school. Each community would typically only have 1 or 2 schools in the entire district and private transportation wasn't the norm. Today however nearly every family has at least 2 cars and there are schools everywhere. Within a 3 mile radius of my house there's probably close to a dozen different schools. It seems that the only reason we keep using school buses is because they're convenient and we expect the government to make things convenient for us. Imagine the cost savings that could be achieved by significantly cutting back on school bus transportation. People are always complaining about how schools never have enough money and teachers are woefully under paid. There's a ton of money tied up in the school transportation dept. that if we were simply willing to be responsible for getting our own kids to school would be free for those things. And not million dollar sports facilities and theater either, but that's another topic I guess.

Now I'm not saying all buses need to go. There are still some people who live in rural areas or poorer areas where the school bus is indeed a necessity. There are school activities like field trips and sport team transportation that needs to be continued. However, I think we could save a ton of money by simply taking our own kids to school and not relying on big brother. I mean really, think about the insurance, fuel, employee, maintenance and on and on. Just the other week there was another story on the news about how a kid hid in the back of the bus and the driver missed him and was sued for "leaving" him on the bus all day. It seems to me the school bus is an idea whose time has come and should be nearly gone.

In my area traffic congestion around schools is a nightmare. Kids should have to ride the school bus. Or if they are being picked up how about more then one kid per car. God forbid little Kylie ride a bus when momma can pick her up.

Ok, you guys have convinced me. I'm in favor of school buses again. Can we at least get the kids to walk to a centralized pick up location though as opposed to the bus stopping in front of each house or corner like they do in my neighborhood though? :)

But take a look at the number of kids on the bus. In a big district there may be 15-20 per bus and 10-20 buses per day making round trips. That's 300-800 car trips per day NOT being made. Less pollution, less traffic, better for the community.

I hate to help you strengthen your argument doorgunner, but one of our customers is Carmel Clay Schools. Carmel is a city of roughly 65,000 people. Not a small school district, but nothing like an Indianapolis, Dallas, or any other metropolitan area. That school requires 170 buses to operate. Every day.

Everyone should either walk to school or stay on the farm and help with the harvest. My grandparents got by with an 8th grade education and they did just fine!!!

Well in Charlotte they are letting Kids in High School Drive the buses then go to school. SO kids taking kids to school sounds like car pooling for kids. I like the bus idea.

Hmm, I am not sure where I fall on this. Out where I live, I can see the need. Also, for parents working trying to get them to school, well, how patient as an employer are you going to be when they are late/leave early to pick up kids. Interesting thoughts Uno

As an X school bus driver I have many stories which I now plan on regaling you with in October. I think you probably need to be closer to the system to know whether it is efficient or not. 7 years ago our community went to a private bus company and I think the costs are somewhat more controlled because of that. We also have a certain distance a child has to be from the school before he/she gets service on the school districts dime. Otherwise the parents pay for the service (I think its like $90.00 a month) unless their are special circumstances. You also have to pay if you use open enrollment to send your child to another district.
