Writing Blank Checks

If you've had even the slightest exposure to the news over the last few days, you know that there is currently a plan being pushed through Congress to bail out banks to the tune of 700 Billion Dollars.  So, because I don't know that much about macro economics and wasn't sure exactly what my tax money was buying I did a little research.  Along the way I came across this video on Boston.com from Barrack Obama regarding what happened yesterday in the negotations.

Don't know how to hyper link in the blog format but the video can be found here...

Now, I'm not here to try and persuade you to think anything positive or negative about Mr. Obama.  However, I found something he said to be a little amusing/scary.  You see, at about the 1:30 mark he makes a remark that makes one scratch their head.  "This administration (referring to the Bush administration) started off by asking for a blank check of 700 billion dollars..."  Now, this guy claims to have a grasp on the economy and answers to all our problems, but apparently doesn't know how a simple check works.  You see, you can have a blank check with no amount, or an exact check for an exact amount, not both.  The administration asked for exactly 700 billion dollars, not a blank check.  A blank check could have been for any amount they wanted.

Had G. Bush made a mistake like that, the pundits would have a field day showing the clip and going on about how he doesn't have the intelligence of a lower primate.  Somehow, I think Obama will be given a pass.

The blank check analogy has been used by just about anyone looking at this plan. I believe they are using Blank Check to equate the bill's original intent having no oversight whatsoever. In addition I have read reports that the "bailout" would actually end up totalling 1 Trillion versus 700 Billion but hey what's another 300 billion between friends.... I'm no economics genius by any means and i'm still confused at who this bailout is really helping. My initial feeling is that it's not going to help the general populace. I do feel it's to benefit Wall Street and save the rich. Maybe i'm wrong but that's the impression I get.

The "blank check"thing relates to HOW they spend it,not the amount. But I think you already knew that,so -1 for disingenuousness. Also, -1 for saying "Now, I'm not here to try and persuade you to think anything positive or negative about Mr. Obama" because, obviously, you are. That makes -2. Care to try for -3? :)

As usual Obama didn't come out for or against the plan until he got a sniff of the wind. That's leadership! And I'm trying to persuade you to think negative things about Obama. So do I get a +1?

Do not suppose to know what I'm thinking Dman. I was looking at the Obama clip 'cause I was trying to get his take. I thought he did pretty well in the debate the other night so I was curious. If anyone, including Bush, Clinton or you had said the exact same thing, I would have been just as stupified. Words do mean things though, so while what he meant to say might have been "A 700 Billion check, with no oversight or regulation" that's not what he said.

Did anyone else go "oh shit!" during the debate when Obama talked about military action in Pakistan? It may not have been exactly what he meant, but it was not a good thing to say.

Point taken. You get +1 back for clarification, but I stand by the initial -1 for saying you weren't trying to say anything bad about him....when you oh so obviously were. And Bubstard loses ALL points past and future for removing his other BLOG. :(
