Laptop Is Dying

My laptop screen goes funky whenever it's moved or even looked at wrong (see the help area forum for more details if you're curious).  I basically use my Gateway 450SX4 for email, internet, and capping/gameplays/montage stuff.  So, no capping for a while.  Hopefully I can figure out a way to fix it, but things don't look good.  I'm chatting with a customer support person who seems to speak English as a second language.  She's assured me that the video chipset was not designed to be replaced or upgraded.  Oh wait, she just said I could mail it to Gateway at my expense and pay approx. $299 + applicable taxes.  Thoughts anyone?  Seems like I could get a brand new one for only a few hundred more than that...

Laptop are extremely integrated so usually you can't fix them yourself or cheaply. I'm not sure what kind of specs your gateway has but I'm not sure you would get much of a laptop for $500-$600 dollars.

Dell has a comparable laptop right now for $629. That's a 40GB, 1.7GHz, 512MB DDR RAM, etc. That's about what I have now. I'm looking at that.

The only impression I have of Gateway is that they all have their head up their ass, mumbling some incoherent language that's certainly not English. Can you tell I've spent alot of time on the phone? I'd get the new one, If you have this one fixed some thing else will break. At least with the new one, you get a warranty.
