Shared on Sat, 06/10/2006 - 14:40I live in Claifornia. In CA we have many non-english speaking individuals. This sometimes becomes a problem when going to, say, a fast food restaurant. Add to that communication problem a 2-way intercom that muffles everything you and the employee says at the drive-through, and you can see how I could get pissed off sometimes.
"Can I get a a number 10 with a coke."
"Number 2?"
"no, teeeen."
"we don hav that kind of drink"
":what?"
"seventen-forty at the front window"
DAMN!
Anyway, McDonalds freaked me out the other day because the voice on the intercom was, how can I say this... white. Not just white, but perky white. Clear and friendly, I thought they had hit the employee jackpot. I get to the window to pay and there is a hispanic male who obviously doesnt speak very much english and certainly didnt take my order. I am, for a time, confused.
I think for a while and this is what I came up with. To help make the drive through faster, there is a pre-recorded greeting.
"welcome to mcdonalds, would you like a value meal today?"
Then, there is either some type of voice recogntion or the person with the headset is taking the order.
There are many pre-recorded messages, including, "im sorry, i did not get that..." and recordings that verify what you ordered.
Its cool. Its also sad. But, hey, we only have people from 50+ countries living here in California - thank god mcdonalds took the time to help us communicate with each other. God forbid we use english anymore in America.
