Which platform is the real loser?

The death of PC gaming has been proclaimed to be nigh for awhile now, but is it really console gaming that could be going out the door? Not that I think it's really in any danger, not everyone can afford to shell out thousands for their rig to play games (gives Mac Pro a loving pet). So here's my thought. We're in the, quote, "next generation" of gaming consoles with huge power-hungry processors and graphics doohickeys with teraflops coming out our ears, yet the hit title Gears of War coming out for PC runs smoother, has more levels and multiplayer modes, and Epic has recently confirmed that the PC version of Unreal Tournament 3 is going to run faster than either console version. I seem to remember with the PS2 and Xbox that it wasn't till later in the life cycle that PC games started to really surpass consoles in graphics and gameplay. I could be making that up, but anyway. Here we are, barely a year and a half into this generation (less for Wii and PS3) and PC games are kicking the crap out of consoles, not to mention the fact that they're doing so while costing $10 less per title. We're also getting quite hosed on microtransactions in the various console shoppes, whereas the PC space has services like Steam that hand out lots of free bonus content for its games, and the fact that the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter Chapter 2 map and modes pack was free for PC but $15 on consoles. It's starting to seem like us console people are being taken advantage of, a vessel for companies to make some quick cash off of our ignorance and gullibility, as well as those tools who jump on message boards to proclaim how incredibly offended they are that company X would charge us $XX for bonus content, but then end their tirade with "but I'll probably buy it anyway". For all this money we're spending on these microtransactions, could we simply be putting it aside in savings to get a solid PC rig to game on instead? You could just wait about 5 years for Halo 3 to hit the PC space (hey, it's like waiting for a game to be ported to Mac) and all will be well.

Oh yeah, Gears will melt eyes on PC..... AND MAC! Mark Rein has announced in an interview on gametrailers.com that both Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3 are coming to Mac. BOOYA! Just for the record, all past Unreal Tournament games (as well as Unreal, but oddly enough not Unreal 2) have been available for Mac, but have been ported by MacSoft Games. Will Gears and UT3 be the same and simply announced much sooner than usual or are is CIDER being utilized to make the transition? Dunno, but it doesn't matter much because they're coming! I'm hoping for a simultaneous release, but we'll see.

The console ultimately is the loser (well the console owner)....when it comes down to games that come out on both PC and home consoles. 1.) They always charge for DLC for consoles. Almost never happens on PC unless its an expansion pack. 2.) $10 cheaper on PC than on X360 and Ps3. How fair is that! Xbox 360 games are on a standard DVD-9 disc! 3.) Better/higher resolutions. Higher frame rates. Just more pretty overall. Gears looked amazing on 360...it'll melt your eyes on PC. With each console generation, consoles become closer and closer to our desktop computers. Some can have that extra functionality with a few modifications. But right now there are pros and cons for both. Consoles don't get the resolutions that PC's can. But PC gaming requires expensive hardware to keep current. And frequent upgrades every 2 years at least. Consoles are subject to over priced DLC. I'm not worried about just PC gaming or just console gaming. I'm worried about gaming overall. When are people gonna just give up and say ya know...enough is enough. I'm tired of paying $400+ for a new video card every 2 years or I'm tired of M$ or Sony charging me $10 for 2 friggin maps. I wasn't around for the first death of gaming back when Atari over flooded the market. And I hope it doesn't happen again anytime soon.
