I need some opinions

Gatsu's blog reminded me of something I wanted to put forth to the greater community. This is one of those ongoing arguments in the teddybear household. My kids, especially the oldest boy, like to go to sites and get cheat codes and such for games. This REALLY bothers teddybear. He figures you should learn the game old skool (sp. intentional, so I don't want to hear it!) like back in the day when you had to plug a thousand quarters in the game. If there were shortcuts to getting a level you had to find them yourself, etc..etc...

The kids will play the game a little bit, get bored, and want to go and find a cheatcode (NOHONOR or something like that) and get limitless ammo or whatever. My observation is they still learn the game because it is like mastering it on the easy level. When they get more practiced, they always try it again without the cheatcode. So I really don't see anything wrong with it.  True, if I am playing that game, I will take the time to try and master it without them with the exception of the Role Playing games like Pokemon. I am a grownup. I don't have time to work all the way through a POKEMON game and then discover that because I miss something after 100 hours I won't be able to beat the final four or whatever. So I go download a manual and read through each of the levels before playing. I still enjoy my game; it is called learning from other peoples expierences, which I consider a very valuable life skill.

Personally, I don't use cheats that weren't intended by the makers of the game and it bothers me that my kids don't seem to have any problems with this and I tell them about it (Don't use my gameboy advanced to pull that little turn the game off in the middle of transfering a pokemon so you can have to copies).

So gaming community, what say you?

Cheat codes are for well cheaters, or just the plain lazy. In my years of gaming I have used cheat codes once, and it was to get past one level after I got past it I turned it off (I felt dirty). If I can't beat a game without a cheat then it just proves the game is past my skill level and I can accept that and move on.

Ok sounds like two different things here what you said at the end about turning off the GB to get a copy etc. is wrong completely its a stepping stone to standbying and bridging. Second when you said cheat sites, I think of legit site that just post codes that are in the game and there to be used. Which by the way is ok, but takes away the challenge, and most games are not including these codes anymore it seems. My personal favorite growing up was unlimited ammo for turok on the N64 I think wicked weapons unlimited ammo sweet. Anyway cheats built into game are ok to use but if relied on to get past everything hard they will never get any better at the game. Hope that helps.

I believe that if a kid has no problem cheating in a game, he will have no problems cheating at school. I will try to instill that concept in my boy when he gets older.

Good point Drewsky. Speaking of that, I get so mad when I hear my kids have an 'open book test'. Why bother?

Hey! Open book tests are how I made it outta college! lol. j/k. But I think cheating has in a way killed alot of potential in the gaming community. And probably a reason so many people complain about some games being too short. Going through a game with 100% health and all weapons makes it too easy and you can breeze through stuff in no time. I agree with Drewsky. Teach em cheaters are lyin douche-bags and can't be trusted.

I'd agree with Crane in that if it is a single player experience, I have no problem with people using cheat codes, I've used them myself. I will say that I do find much more satisfaction from finishing a game without cheat codes (God of War for example). In my own personal gaming life, I find that IF I use a cheat code, I'm more likely to get bored of the game and move on. If Dead Rising had an unlimited health code, the game would downright BLOW, but as there aren't any cheat codes, I find myself going back to just get a little bit farther in the story, level up just a little bit more. Now Online is a different story. If you're cheating online, you deserve to be kicked repeatedly in your genitals until they turn black and fall off.

Unless of course your genitals are already black, in which case I'd like to state for the record that I'm not a racist and in no way meant my previous statement as a racist comment. Asalamalakem my brothers and sisters....hehehe.

Additional thought: I don't have problems with cheat codes but I wouldn't cheat at school or help anyone else cheat either. In my mind there is a difference between recreation and testing your knowledge. But as I have said, when the kids are interested in the game, they do go back and do the level without the cheat code.

I always remember when I was a kid, if I used a cheat code to beat a level or game, it just wasn't that satisfying. I agree with Neanderthal, sometimes you just have to except the fact that some challenges are going to be beyond your abilities. No sense in encouraging taking shortcuts now. If you can't handle the little things in life without a shortcut or cheat how will you deal with more important decisions later? My .02

Games have cheat codes? Seriously though, I have only used one once, and that was to unlock Far Cry Predator without having to play all the way through Far Cry Instincts AGAIN. Silliest thing I've ever seen in a game...without the cheat is makes you play the old game before getting to the new game?!?! I'm all about maximizing the VALUE of a game, and cheat codes seem to do the opposite. What's the point of beating a game if you don't actually BEAT IT!

I have no problem with using cheat codes in games, so long as they don't affect anyone else's enjoyment of the game. If I want unlimited ammo and invincibility and I'm playing a single player game, then, hooray, I'm Super-man. If I'm playing against someone else, then boo, I'm a dirtbag. I have often used "cheat codes" to get through games that were too difficult and/or time consuming for me, and while that is not as satisfying as beating it myself, I simply don't have enough gaming time to get good enough to beat every game. (If you play Halo2 with me you know I'm kinda non-skilled too). For me, video games are more like an interactive movie. I could care less about being "good" at the game. I just want to see all the levels, play with all the weapons, and finish the storyline. Playing a level over and over until I "get it right" has just never been fun to me. As long as I'm not hurting anyone else, it isn't really cheating to me, because I don't have any ties between my virtual fun and my real world. (I never cheated in school and I work hard at my job and around the house. I abhor real life shoddyness and short-cuts, and strive for quality in all the things I do that really matter.) As long as your kids aren't cheating in the real world, or cheating in games in a way that negatively impacts someone else's gaming experience, I say "fair play" to them. Also, these are just my opinions based on how I like to enjoy my games. I can totally understand people who don't ever use cheat codes and feel that it cheapens the game for them. For me, I'm glad these codes exist because without them there are many, many, many games that I never would have been able to "finish". Seeing all of the content is more rewarding to me than the small downside of not beating the game on my own.
