Opinionation.

I will openly admit that I'm an opinionated bastard.

When I play a game that doesn't live up to my expectations, I will criticize it. If I continue to play it, despite my criticism, and I am continually less than impressed, in all likelihood, I will criticize it repeatedly. Such is the case with Shadowrun. Yes, I have been highly critical of the game and, frankly, I just don't see why it's lavished with praise by some folks. No, I don't think my opinion is inherently the right one simply because it's my own, but when multiple people on many sites have the same complaints and when the game's overall sales seem to line up with said complaints, it tends to make feel that my opinions are credible and my criticism justifiable.

For the sake of everyone's sanity, I won't repeat all of my criticisms of Shadowrun, but I wanted to say that I believe there is a marked difference between repeatedly criticizing a game and "whining".

For example, here's what a sentence about Shadowrun which I consider criticism: "For $60, as a multiplayer only game, Shadowrun doesn't deliver as good of a multiplayer experience as titles before (or after) it, lacking a lot of things which add longevity to multiplayer titles such as custom avatars, custom game types and persistent stats tracking."

Now here's an example of what I'd consider whining: "LOL this game sucks, all of you who bought it are losers, FASA sucks!"

Never once have I posted anything on these Shadowrun forums which looks like sentence number 2. Ever. Yes, I've stated that I feel FASA screwed us by dumping out a product that wasn't as great as they hyped it to be or even as good as it could have been and then, apparently, abandoning it. Yes, I've complained that patches were slow to come and that some of the changes were, in my opinion, asinine. But these were all well written, opinion-based, criticisms. Never once did I belittle anyone who enjoyed the game, never once did I tell anyone that they were wrong for not sharing my opinion.

So when I'm called a whiner because my opinion of a game differs and is unfavorable and/or highly critical, it doesn't sit well with me. If what I type is "whining" when I'm openly criticizing a game and it takes several paragraphs to type, I'd hate to think what statements like "LOLZ SR SUCKS" would be classified as.

Good read. Thanks for blogging. I dunno about SR, never played it, but I think you're correct about the difference between whining and criticism.

I'm an opinionated bastard too -Salute! However, I do think that even well-founded, justified criticisms can turn into whining if they're repeated over and over and over again...And it can be easy to repeat yourself when others see it a different way beyond your comprehension....And - I'm not saying you do that because I don't even read the Shadowrun shit...I'm just saying that whining can be more sophisticated that "STFU Noob, that game sucks!"

@TDrag: A very valid point. Did I cross the line with how many times I posted criticism? Maybe. But I dunno. I don't think I posted the same complaints in every thread. I'm sure I repeated myself at least three times, but in all three cases it was someone asking for opinion, so I shared mine. Oh well, water under the bridge now, I suppose. I think this entire post stems from the fact that I dislike the word "whiner". Far too often it's applied to anyone with an opposing viewpoint in a poor attempt to discredit an opinion.

Having high standards is nothing to be ashamed of. I have high standards also. If you make a criticism and then after receiving feedback clarify you points then no, that’s not whining. If you post at least 3 times a day making smart critical statements about a game then maybe you are a sophisticated whiner. But a whiner none the less. The problem is these days on some forums comments like “LOL SUXORS” is considered deep and insightful. :)

I just went and read your post in the SR forum. It didn't read like whining to me. You were just stating your opinion. Obviously some people can't deal with the fact that not everyone is going to go ape shit for the same things you do. Ah well... Don't let it grate your cheese.

Thanks for posting that Cap. It is good to see a delineation between the too. Yes sometimes there are areas of grey between being whiny and critical. I tend to give people leeway when they seem to be in the grey area once in a while but I lose tolerance for 'opinions' laced with name calling and/or those who can't (or won't) distinguish this is how I feel with this is how it is. We pay a lot of money for our games and one of the great things about this site is it gives me the ability to make a more informed decision about a game before I buy it. Those folks who only have 'professional' reviews to go by miss out.
