Trigger Update

Happily, Trigger is still with me. The vet didn't think the severity of the infection warranted having him put to sleep just yet. So he's on Baytril for two weeks and has to drink some Ensure to prevent dehydration and also boost nutrition, hopefully helping him gain back some of the weight he's lost over the last week. Luckily, he loves the taste of the liquid Baytril (hell, I'd take it - it smells like a grape flavored hard candy) and he absolutely loves vanilla Ensure.

We'll have to see how this plays out, I suppose. I would like to think he's already doing a little better as he seems to be a bit more active. Hopefully by the end of two weeks we'll have this respiratory infection knocked the hell out and suppressed for longer than 3 months.

Well that's good that he's doing better...I can't really relate to having rats as pets...But I know how much I love my cats so I'm sure you feel the same about your furries....

I had a ferret that passed away earlier this year from GI cancer and went through two vets (and 1000 dollars) to get him fixed, only to turn around and have to euthanize him. The first vet wanted me to force feed him with a syringe and it just didn't work.. he was continuing to lose weight and wasn't active. He charged me 800 dollars and only found out "his kidney's are okay".. I took him to another vet and he did a few tests and found out that most of his intestines were tumorous and he wasn't going to get better anytime soon. He let me take him home with some more baby food to feed him. The next morning he was limp like a sock.. he looked severely ill and in pain. I took him in to have him put to sleep as I didn't want him to suffer any longer. I'm a buddhist and I'll be the last person to kill anything without a reason, but if there is no chance of him getting better and he's suffering.. I didn't see the mercy in keeping him alive. it's good to see someone else willing to go the extra mile for a pet some people consider lesser than any other animal. There are people who would just assume put them to sleep than to spend any effort, time, or money on the hope of them living out their life to the fullest. and I'm with ATC_1982 put up some pics.

@TDrag27: Thanks. It's not so much relating to rats, per se, but pets in general. I hate to see any of them sick, or anyone else's sick. Being at the vet's absolutely depresses me because I see so many ailing animals. It makes me wonder how many other ailing animals are out there who don't have owners willing to get them to the vet. That's probably why I avoid the Animal Planet channel like the plague, especially the 'rescue' shows like Animal Cops. @gigatrix: Sorry to hear about your ferret. :( I've found that a lot of vets are very hit and miss. Some think they can just throw some medication at the problem and it'll be fixed, others take the extra time to actually run the tests. My old vet was in the latter category, but she's since retired. I'm not enthralled with our new vet who specializes in small mammals because he tends to have a chip on his shoulder. I may not have a DVM after my name, but I've had pet rats for going on 7 years now, I'm pretty well versed in rat ailments and physiology; yet I'm treated like I know almost nothing by this new vet. BTW, I'm Buddhist, as well. The decision of euthanizing really doesn't come lightly. But there does come a point, unfortunately, where money is a factor. One of my original pet rats kept suffering from repeat respiratory (mycoplasma pulmonis) infections. We could have kept her alive another couple months by having repeat prednasolone injections, nebulized medication and antibiotics, but it would have cost about 300 every two weeks for an extra two months of life that wouldn't have been what I'd call great. That didn't seem like a responsible option for that situation. @ATC_1982 & gigatrix: Pics, eh? Lets see if I can link to an earlier blog post in comments. If not, I'll just post another blog with the link. I think this was my third or fourth post. The pics aren't that great, a lot of low light problems and some I took with my camera phone: Pics of the current two plus links to my original colony pics.
