It's basically a really easy way to get a simple website up and running, but with gmail and other apps built in. So instead of yourname@gmail.com, you can have your own domain name. Definitely worth a yearly domain name registration if only for email.
I've used Google page creator, which I know has limitations, and this is what I've got so far:

Not bad for just a few minutes work. It gives me yet another diversion while I'm sitting at my work computer.
