I still can’t stop playing BF1943 and I think I’ve figured out why. I’m sure most older gamers can identify with the fact that the older you get, the less time you have to play games. At the moment, I have two small boys and a full time job so playing time is severely limited and is mainly confined to squeezing an hour between their bedtime and my bedtime (or when they wake up which usually comes first).
That’s where BF1943 comes in. It’s perfect in small bites of 20 minutes or so. It’s got all the elements of a full sized FPS without the time required to play through and learn all the intricacies. In my opinion it’s essentially a Battlefield version of something like Geometry Wars or Tetris. It has all the elements of scorekeeping and leaderboards like a good arcade game should but also plays out differently every time you play. Every game is different.
My aim is still to keep playing until I reach level 50, then quit. I’ve still only made it to level 40, but we’ll see. The longer I play this game, the longer my stack of unplayed games gets. Last week I managed to pick up cheap copies of Streetfighter Alpha Anthology on PS2 and Odama on GC. Would love to try Odama especially but that would involve unpacking and hooking up my GC. Maybe just one more go of BF1943 instead for now….
