I haven’t blogged for ages but some thoughts were going through my mind this morning and I thought I might regurgitate them for you and see if any one has comments or insights.  First off these are random thoughts and I must stress that I am not in any way qualified to talk in an expert capacity. In fact I’m about as much an expert as the average Joe or Joan on the street after about 3-4 pints.   In other words I’m prepared to talk about something about which I know nothing.  What I was wondering about basically is the right of the individual.  Does the individual have too much power in modern Western Society? Now don’t get me wrong I’m not coming at this from a neo-Nazi agenda point of view but I think it’s something worth considering. I’ll give an example from where I live. There is a very dangerous piece of narrow road near me. It’s narrow because some people own a tiny strip of land that they won’t give up. Instead they use it to fit in about 5 daffodils. Now every morning I see near accidents on this stretch because basically it’s on a blind hill as well. So my point, should the local government just say screw you and your flowers, take the piece of ground and build a road over it. Similarly in the estate where I live we cant cut back some trees to free up a blind corner because one house objects.
These are trivial examples and I don’t want to take this argument to its conclusion but in these cases should the good of the majority overrule the rights of the individual?
Where would the ant hive be if all the ants decided to exert their “ant rights”?

I don't think any American can quite grasp "narrow road" until they've driven in Ireland! We have eminent domain laws in the states. I don't always agree with how they're exercised, but sometimes they make sense if the owner is given fair value.

TDrag nailed it. Fair value (according to the government) and the government can claim that land with no cause. But they would first commission a study for ACTUAL vehicle crashes in that corner to deem if it would be necessary to do that.

Doesnt seem to work like that in Ireland. Have you ever seen "The Field"? We sure do love our land (or even piece of boggy, mucky wasteland as the case may be). Maybe because the English took it off us for 800 years ;)

If the local drivers were to "accidentally" drive over the strip a few times, I'm sure this would work itself out.Not sure if they're up to it,though,I found drivers in Ireland to be almost uniformly courteous,except for the lorry drivers in Dublin and Belfast. In the states it'd be a massive clusterfuck and lawsuits would be involved.

The government should send him on a 2 week vacation. As soon as he is on the plane stick a notice on his door saying he has 24hrs to dispute the road installation. While he's gone, build the road and when he gets back tell him that he was given notice but didn't reply. And if he back talks, smack him with one of those big irish whacking sticks! CONK that MOFO in the head!

"Courteous drivers". You obviously never met the Timmy-racers on our roads.
