I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to ask you to leave

How many assholes do you know?

I'm not talking about those who have a bad day once in a while. I'm talking about the persistently unpleasant people who seem to thrive on being unpleasant.

For instance, my brother's mother-in-law is a class "A" shrew. We try to avoid her, but there are family events you are forced to come in contact with her. She waits to make some bitchy comment. It's especially bad in families. It's as if you are genetically condemned to endure these people.

Why isn't there some social censure to assholes? I've been to bars where drunk people are asked to leave. I've never seen a rude person shown the curb.

I would much rather hang with drunks, the flatuance challenged, or some other misfit, than the mean.

But no, if you're a dick, you can operate freely in society. You can't smoke in a public place, but you can be a merciless jerk.

I would like to see a No Assholes campaign, Hollywood.

Everyone has their differences/oddities in personalities but the kind of people your talking of, just dont belong. They never seem to miss a trick and rarely is there hesitation in their actions (years of practice). I dunno, some people have their own ammendment to uphold the the practices of being: Rude, spiteful and condescending to all in their paths. And if they cant have it their way........why not screw things up for others?

I've found that those people are the ones who are the most unhappy with themselves. Can't take being alone with themselves, so they give the nastiness out like it's candy. I try and make sure to keep a distance in a professional venue, because I'm not known to tolerate it well. I give it back. I can tolerate ignorance, insensitivity and even arrogance, but meanness for meanness' sake gets me riled. I think the Anti-Asshole Brigade has been founded here tonight! :)

Unfortunately, you can't always avoid these people. Instead, I am learning a technique called "Verbal Judo." It allows a person to deflect cruel "barbs" directed at them without being on the defensive and still look like the better person, with a smile. The smile is important, it takes away the underlying cruelty. It also shows any witnesses that the conversation is civil even though it may not be.
