11/29/06 - Driving to fast on a emergency call.

Copes

Does anybody have a problem with Fireman or Cops driving a little "faster" than normal while enroute to a "child choking call"??????.

I would not think most people would. Yesterday, My partner and I were dispatched to a elementary school for a child in the lunch room choking on food. As a unwritten rule that we have all followed in the fire service is that on this type of call you can drive faster that normal. Well as we pulled into the school parking lot a guy in his vehicle pulled next to us and started yelling at us the we needed to slow down. We naturally ignored him and ran into the school.

Well the kid barfed up the hotdog right as I bent down to help him and we started all the medical care stuff for him. He is doing fine now, but I fully expect to get a complaint report filled with the city from this guy, because waiting for us upon returning to the truck was him stating that he will be calling the city and chief.

I really cant wait to defend myself and my partner on this asshole that thinks that we were just driving to fast. A childs life was more important to me and If I do get wrote up it will be well worth it. Seeing the kid smiling and talking is well worth anything bad that could come out of this.......

Emergency services are utilized for just that purpose... emergencies. If you have a life or death situation - isn't it normal and understood that you will do whatever it takes to get to where you need to go as fast as you can? Don't you also take some courses on driving at higher than "normal" speeds?

I've worked for a few ex cops at my old security job, and it was so disheartening to hear how many times, he or his department got sued for doing the actual right thing. There is a thing as excessive speeding in certain situations, though on the end of firemen if its a burning building or child in danger I can hardly think a speed that is out of range, but the problem is, that in this country though great for some reason dickheads that like to sue usually win for some pretty crappy things. Sorry it was just rant but I really hope he just lets calling and bitching go.

What an asshole! All I can say is you did your job and any complaint about your driving will probably end up just being a fart in the wind. (All the complaints I've gotten have ended up that way.) Unfortunitely, complaints from certain parts of the public about driving any sort of EMS vehicle comes with the territory. Keep the faith brother.
