a blog is a "web-log", an online diary abbreviated and shortend to "blog" for your convenience.

blog is 'web log' . A log is the computer version of a personal diary. Computers log stuff for operators to read. A blog is a personal diary online so it was named a log , a log of things you want to say for the day for others to read on the web.
