We pulled out from where the car was parked, and before we had gone very far, I realized the car had no brakes. On top of that, I hadn't taken the time to locate the emergency brake or emergency flashers before we pulled out, so I didn't know where either of them were. My wife suggested pulling into the gas station parking lot, but they were so busy I was afraid I would hit someone. Instead, I turned right at the first intersection we came to, forgetting that it was a long, steep hill. I pumped the brakes repeatedly, but all it would do was slow us down a little. I finally found the emergency brake and pulled it, but it wouldn't stop us. We went through 2 red lights, somehow managing not to hit anyone, and then finally got the car to a stop in an uphill parking area. After we calmed down, we called the owner and told him what happened, and he came to pick us up (he lived close by anyway). Apparently the brake line blew out shortly after we started out on our test drive, which resulted in the loss of brakes. We were so pleased with how it handled without brakes, however, that we decided that if he was willing to fix the brakes and take $1500 for it, we'd buy it. He said that would work for him (in between apologies - he must have said he was sorry about a dozen times). So once the brakes get fixed, it will be our primary car, moving the Geo Metro we bought yesterday to secondary car status.
We decided to go out and eat at Chili's to celebrate being alive, and I even had a drink or two (which I rarely do).
