Personal Trainer

As a guy, I believe there are a few things you don't do.  You don't read the manual.  You don't ask for directions when you're lost.  AND you don't have a personal trainer.  I mean, hey, I'm a guy -- what could someone show me in the gym that I don't already know?

I just switched gyms to one that is about 2 minutes from my office, so that I shouldn't have any excuse to not work out daily.  As part of the sign-up, they had a deal on having a personal trainer for 4 sessions, so I figured "what the hell".  I show up for my first session and this pretty little girl introduces herself as my trainer.

The strength routine she put together for me has put me in more pain than I've felt in a long time.  And I've been lifting long enough to recognize this as the good type of pain.  Still, I have to take 4 Aleve tablets just to sleep I'm so sore.  I guess I don't know as much about the inside of a gym as I thought.  Maybe I'll start reading manuals and asking for directions now too.

I was totally against this too. Then I saw a friend who had started using a personal trainer. He had dropped 3-4 inches on his waist and added 4-5 on his chest (all muscle). We're the same age and we used to be out of shape ex-jocks together (me football and soccer, him soccer and lacrosse). Now I'm thinking about this. I know how to lift, but I think in the amount of time I have to dedicate to working out that a trainer would help me get more from less time. And time is important to me.

I was a certified personal trainer for 2 years. Ironically, all of the personal trainers wished they could afford their own personal trainers. A good exercise routine is more than just knowing the motions, it's executing on the action with good form and timing repeatedly for maximum time/effort efficiency. Most people don't push themselves to their limits during their workouts. When they start paying dollars for a trainer, they "force" themselves to get the most for their money in a limited time frame, and accept the rigors of increased effort in decreased time.
