A lot of the discovery in this game comes down to common sense. Apparently, the accessories you outfit your pinatas with can determine some of their actions in the garden.
I also mutated my first creature, a white flutterscotch (which looks like a moth). By having one eat a bluebell flower, I created a blue butterscotch. I did the same thing with a purple tulip and now have a purple flutterscotch. I'm not sure if they are now different species from one another, so I don't know yet if I can breed them and make some kind of hybrid flutterscotch.
If you play this game, don't underestimate the value of the encylopedia or of the advice (gossip) that Leafos can give you. And it doesn't hurt to periodically browse the shops as new items are constantly being added and sometimes seeing a certain item may just give you an "a-ha" moment.
