I was watching Avatar this morning and I was looking at the CGI and I was wondering if we could make CGI this good now and how would it look in ten years from now.

Well As I am taalking about Avatar here is a little more on what I think about the movie. Avatar combines parts of Pocahontas and Braveheart with a liberal dose of Space Marines into an epic whole that takes nearly three full hours to unfold. We could criticise that length, the weak story and the hammy dialogue. We could attack its thinly-veiled ecological message or the frankly bizarre spirituality in its second half but honestly nothing can spoil the experience while you are enveloped in it. And a large part of that is down to the brilliant use of 3D – which is both subtle and incredibly effective. Til now, we have been making movies with 3D elements, Avatar is the first truly 3D film and might well prove to be one of the most significant things to happen to blockbuster film-making since Star Wars.

Cameron is also pushing the envelope with truly photo-real CG – something which has been promised for years but has finally been delivered with Avatar. The interactions of the characters with the environment is incredible and the detail on the faces of the motion-captured leads bring them to life. You will believe totally in their performances, representing another quantum leap in tools which have rarely been used for anything other than spectacle. I will state that I love Zoe Saldana and her role.

Avatar is also one of the best blue rays you can buy right now it will show you the true power of blue ray and make you wonder how real will CGI get.

I think that Avatar is a landmark achievement that will lead to thinning out the ranks of Screen-actors (of which there are far too many anyway). In the next ten-twenty years we'll see actors becoming more and more faceless, becoming voice- or motion-capture actors. Before long, CGI movies will be cheaper to produce than live-actor movies, and ledning directors more freedom in filling in roles... take for instance a tomb-raider movie... they can hire a gymnast for the acrobatics and pay her peanuts and then hire Angelina Jolie only for her voice which is about ten times cheaper than hiring her to act out Lara Croft too. Finally, the CGI-artists can give their rendering of the Lara Croft that was used in the latest Tombraider and give her foto-realistic appearance. I think that a lot of screen-actors should start looking into a new career and quite probably pretty soon.
