Iron bow rivalry amps up http://www.ajc.com/sports/radio-show-caller-said-841586.html

Caller claims to have poisoned historic oak trees in Toomers Corner, Auburn, AL. I was even surprised to hear this, but if my rival did something to this effect to my university I know payback would be equally spiteful.

Expect Bama's statue of Bear Bryant to be decapitated and replaced with a giant cock. Also expect this "Al" caller to be leaving the state of Alabama as he will be hunted down by the Auburn faithful and made to pay.

I'll admit - I don't like Auburn - I think their program is a cesspool of cheats. I think the Cam situation was a gross miscarriage, and I think their current recruiting successes are due in large part to violations (see the Robinson and Reed probes, in addition to the secondary violations they've racked up). Now, Auburn fans have generally been intolerable this season. They have resorted to some practical jokes - but, petty vandalism at best (vandalizing Saban's lake house, the Bryant statue and the rye grass). This is way over the line. And the Auburn shenanigans to this point in no way warranted the destruction of 130 year old live oaks, which are a symbol of the university. I have a couple hopes here - first, that the trees can be saved. Second - that the guy who did it is caught and made an example of. Third - that the guy isn't really a Bama fan (a stretch I know). Fourth - if the guy is a Bama fan, I hope he's not an alumnus or Tide Pride ticket holder. If either, he should be permanently disassociated from the University. I think the Alabama/Auburn rivalry has been elevated in part because of the internet. Sure, it's always been a 365/24/7 kind of thing, but now, you have essentially anonymous people on both sides spewing all sorts of garbage on a continuous basis. Go out to the Auburn or Alabama message boards. They're a mess. What I find hilarious is that they're equally interchangeable. Both fan bases are essentially the same in their lunacy. Was a time you'd see an Auburn guy out in public, and you could engage in some good-natured ribbing. However, you weren't a screen name who could just say anything, no matter how crazy. For instance, I never heard an Auburn fan refer to Bear Bryant as "that dead drunk" until I got online many years ago. I refuse to post on those boards as it's not so much discussion of college football, but more juvenile name calling, black helicopter conspiracies and general ugliness. All that aside, I personally wouldn't be too distraught if an Auburn fan cut the head off of the Bryant statue. Sure, I'd be mad, but in the end, a statue can be repaired. I'd be more upset if someone took a sledgehammer to the captain's walk of fame by the Denny Chimes. Those can't be replaced. Best of luck to Auburn in regards to the trees. I hope they are saved. I know Auburn has a fantastic agricultural prowess, so hopefully, they can figure out a way to save them.

SPIKE80DF FLORIBAMA 2011-01-26 16:06:25 What a crackpot douchebag. He's saying he did it because Auburn supposedly rolled the trees when Bryant passed away in 1983. This is an urban legend that has long been circulating. I don't know if it's true or not. I've heard people say they're 100% certain both ways. I have seen the Toomer's trees rolled for other things - like the Braves winning the world series, or Alabama losing a game on a weekend that Auburn didn't play, but I have no idea about the 1983 thing. Either way, what's the big deal? It's nearly 30 years in the past.

Good dig on his message board posts. I don't know all the special traditions at Bama, so that sledgehammer idea might be something they ponder.

Criminal Mischief with a max 10 years in the clink? I wonder if the trees are registered historical landmarks? If so, could he get more time? I hope he just pleads guilty and doesn't go through a circus of a trial - just get his ass in jail. In any event, I don't think he's the kind of cat who can raise a $50k bond. It doesn't seem like he's an alum. Hopefully, Alabama can do some sort of banning so he won't be allowed on campus or any event, athletic or otherwise.
