Shared on Fri, 10/05/2007 - 10:15I recently tried Thai food and loved it. Dastard had tried previously to get me to go but I had visions of hot curry and the aftermath of spending time in the bathroom. Well, that is just a small realm of what Thai food is. I opened the menu and found stir fry and entrees that sounded very tasty and although similar to what Chinese food might be, a tad different ingredients.
My first introduction was with stir fried pineapple. OMG, very good. It had stir fried rice, pineapple, cashews and some veggies. I had the option of adding a meat, tofu or more veggies. I looked at the tofu and thought WTF? Why would anyone want to add something like that? Well, my dinner companion, really likes tofu and added it to her dish. Ok, I have to admit, I'm not really very adventurous in trying new foods, but I was more than a bit curious. I tried it, not sure what to expect except maybe a bland tasting cube of mush.
Far from that, it was not bad. The outside was crisp, like a toasted marshmallow and the inside had the consistency of a marshmallow. The taste was not bad. It had taken the flavor of the brown sauce served with the dish. Interesting. My next visit I had the Mango Chicken entree and that was very delicious. No, I wasn't daring enough to add any tofu but the thought did cross my mind. This last time I went for Thai, I had a stir fried butternut squash and asked if I could add chicken and a little tofu. I had to try it. It wasn't bad. I was impressed. Of course, I'm not yet convinced that I should have a full meal full of tofu, but with the nutritional value, it isn't bad to add a little here and there. I'm not going to go out and make a Tofurkey for Thanksgiving. Still a carnivore, but I have something new to add to some of my dishes.
I checked out wiki and the way this is made is very similar to cheese. It starts from soy milk and the process from there is about the same. It has the ability to gain flavor from the surrounding ingredients and that makes it very versatile. I have to admit, it is much easier to think of it as a cheese I'm adding then admitting I'm eating tofu. Well, don't be afraid to try it next time you go out to eat and it is offered.
